Three Underdogs to Watch in the BMW Championship
The 2025 BMW Championship takes place Thursday, Aug. 14th at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. It is a solid lineup with hungry players to prove themselves before the Ryder Cup, which is taking place in a few weeks. However, some are just hoping for the best, considering the odds are far from being in their favor. Players like Keegan Bradley, J.J. Spaun, and Tommy Fleetwood are underdogs that are still underestimated. The problem these players are facing is that they have had some lucky victories, but have a problem showing consistency with that. Each of them is a unique case.
Keegan Bradley
Bradley is a familiar face at the BMW Championship, but his role will significantly change in the next few weeks. As of now, Bradley still hasn’t decided whether or not he is going to participate in the Ryder Cup Championship. His apprehension is understandable considering the poor results he has gotten at events such as the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship or the 2025 Open Championship. With only one win under his belt for the year, the 39-year-old player understands he is falling behind, and he also has problems with keeping his wins consistent. All of this is why spectators doubt Bradley’s ability to fulfill the role of playing captain, a title that has not been held by any other player since 1951. After the BMW championship, Bradley will have a significant part to play at the upcoming Ryder Cup, so hopefully, he doesn’t crack under pressure.
J.J. Spaun
The San Diego State graduate’s participation in the Championship is surprising to say the least. He was a +3000 longshot who had lost both the PLAYERS Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship. However, that does not mean he has not seen improvement. At the 2025 US Open, he won his first championship since winning at the 2022 Valero Texas Open. Out of the 240 events he has played since turning pro in 2012, he has only had two wins. Though fans hope he can keep up his improvement, it may be a slow journey.
Tommy Fleetwood
Though he won the FedEx tournament, Fleetwood’s fans have the most doubts about it. Unlike the others on this list, he has not had a single career win since turning pro in 2010. Though to the surprise of most, he has been improving a lot in the past year. He placed well at the 2025 FedEx Tournament, tying in third place with Scottie Scheffler. However, the score didn’t change much about his rank, which is still too low to qualify for the upcoming season’s events. There's still some hope for the 34-year-old player since being confirmed to have a spot in the 2025 Ryder Cup. Now, more than ever, is the time to lock in and prove a decade’s worth of doubt wrong.
