Tottenham on the Brink: Could This Be Their First Relegation in Nearly 50 Years?

The last time 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur tasted victory in this 2025-2026 Premier League campaign feels like a distant memory. That win came on December 28th, 2025, in Matchweek 18, when the Spurs narrowly defeated 14th-place Crystal Palace 1-0. The match itself was far from dominant, but it was effective as defender Archie Gray found the back of the net in the 42nd minute, giving Tottenham just enough to secure all three match points. At the time, it seemed like a routine mid-season win against a 14th-place side. However, in hindsight, that moment now marks the beginning of a prolonged drought. Since then, Tottenham have been unable to replicate that success in Premier League play, turning what once looked like a steady campaign into one defined by inconsistency, missed opportunities, and growing pressure, ultimately culminating in a disastrous season.

A Dramatic Fall Toward Relegation

Since that late-December victory, Tottenham’s form in the Premier League has collapsed. The club has failed to win a single league match, slipping dangerously close to the relegation zone as the 2025-2026 campaign nears its conclusion. While there have been glimpses of resilience, such as a surprising 2-2 draw against second-place Manchester City back on February 1st and a recently hard-fought 1-1 result against fifth-seed Liverpool on March 15th, these isolated performances have not translated into meaningful progress in the standings. In a league where wins are crucial for survival, accumulating single points from draws simply has not been enough. As other teams continue to pick up victories, Tottenham’s inability to do the same has left them teetering on the edge, with relegation no longer a distant possibility but a very real threat.

Success Beyond the League: A Stark Contrast

Interestingly, Tottenham’s struggles have largely been confined to the domestic Premier League. In European competition, particularly the UEFA Champions League, Tottenham has shown a completely different side. On January 20th, the Spurs secured a convincing 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, with Cristian Romero scoring early in the 14th minute and Dominic Solanke doubling the lead in the 37th minute. Just over a week later, on January 28th, they repeated that success with another 2-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt. In that particular match, Randal Kolo Muani opened the scoring in the 47th minute, followed by Solanke once again finding the net in the 77th. These performances highlight a puzzling contrast: a team capable of competing and winning on Europe’s biggest stage, yet unable to secure results in their domestic Premier League play. This inconsistency raises questions about focus, squad rotation, and the mental toll of balancing multiple competitions.

What Comes Next: A Relegation Battle Intensifies

Looking ahead, Tottenham’s immediate future is filled with uncertainty and pressure. Just behind them sits West Ham United in 18th place, trailing by a single point with 29 compared to Tottenham’s 30 points. The stakes could not be higher. If West Ham overtakes them, the Spurs will fall directly into the relegation zone. Adding to the tension is their recent history, including a 2-1 loss to West Ham on January 17th in Premier League week 22. For a club that has not been relegated since the 1976-77 Premier League season, the possibility of dropping out of the Premier League after nearly half a century is staggering. This looming milestone underscores just how dire the situation has become and how urgently Tottenham must respond.

A Crucial April: Matches That Will Define the Season

The month of April may ultimately decide Tottenham’s fate. They are set to face 11th-place Sunderland on April 12th, then 10th-seed Brighton on April 18th, and finally last-place Wolverhampton Wanderers on April 25th. Previous encounters suggest closely matched competition. For instance, Tottenham drew 1-1 with Sunderland on January 4th and tied 2-2 with Brighton earlier in the season on September 20th. While these results indicate equality, they also emphasize a troubling pattern: Spurs have struggled to convert competitive performances into wins. Against Wolves, however, there may be a greater opportunity. Although they suffered a 4-2 defeat in last year’s fixture on April 13th and tied 1-1 on September 20th, recent performances suggest Tottenham could have the edge this time on April 25th. Still, draws will not suffice for Spurs. With only one point awarded for a tie, Tottenham must secure victories to create separation from West Ham and avoid slipping further into the danger of relegation.

West Ham’s Opportunity to Overtake

Meanwhile, West Ham’s upcoming schedule presents them with a genuine chance to overtake Tottenham. They will face Wolverhampton on April 10th, followed by matches against Crystal Palace on April 20th and eighth-place Everton on April 25th. While a win against the Wolves is possible for West Ham, it is far from guaranteed, given their previous 3-0 loss against the Wolves on January 3rd. Moreover, matches against Crystal Palace and Everton also present challenges, though draws remain a realistic outcome.

In such a tight points race, even a couple of draws could be enough to push West Ham ahead. Past results, such as their 1-1 draw with Everton on September 29th and 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace earlier in the season on September 20th, do offer some context for the upcoming matches. However, these previous matches are far from definitive indicators. As the Premier League season progresses into its final stretch, teams evolve, improve, and adapt over time. Therefore, these upcoming April fixtures could unfold for West Ham in entirely different ways.

A Premier League Season on the Brink

Tottenham now find themselves in one of the most precarious positions in the club’s modern history. With just a one-point cushion over West Ham, every match moving forward carries enormous weight. The upcoming fixtures for both teams will likely determine who survives and who falls into relegation. Tottenham must not only improve their performances but also convert opportunities into victories, something they have struggled to do for months. Whether they can rise to the occasion or succumb to the pressure remains to be seen. One thing is certain: the coming weeks will define their season, and potentially, their place within English football history.
