Veteran Tight End Re-Signs with the New York Giants

NFL

The Giants have more cap space than they could have imagined this year. They were expected to replace another tight end after Chris Manhertz. However, recent news confirmed that the New York Giants have re-signed the veteran tight end to a one-year contract for the 2026 season. The 33-year-old will return for his third year with the team. Manhertz is known for his blocking ability and durability, having appeared in all 34 games over the last two seasons with the Giants.

Manhertz entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Manhertz played college basketball at Canisius College, where he never played college football, but developed elite size and athleticism that intrigued scouts. After the 2015 NFL Draft, he signed with the Buffalo Bills as a developmental tight end project, learning the fundamentals of the position. Manhertz spent the early years of his career bouncing between practice squads and active rosters before carving out a role as a blocking tight end with the Carolina Panthers. His physical blocking ability and willingness to do the dirty work helped him stay in the league, eventually leading to a multi-year stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After several seasons establishing himself as a reliable veteran blocker and locker-room presence, Manhertz later signed with the New York Giants to add experience and toughness to their tight end group.

Manhertz has appeared in more than 150 NFL games. Throughout his time in the league, he has recorded 30 receptions for 308 yards and three touchdowns. His role has rarely focused on the passing game. Manhertz has built his reputation as a physical run blocker and reliable veteran presence in tight end rooms across multiple teams. While his receiving numbers are modest, coaches value his toughness and ability to help establish the run game. That blocking ability has allowed him to carve out a long-term NFL career.

Now that Manhertz has re-signed with the New York Giants, he can continue contributing to the team. He has consistently stepped up when his team has needed him. Manhertz has proven to be a reliable and valuable asset for the Giants and will look to continue that role over the next year. The team has been looking to rebuild and improve its offense for some time. It was an unexpected re-signing, but one that allows the Giants to continue benefiting from his experience and blocking ability.
