Way Too Early 2026 Heisman Candidates
Even though it’s only June and college football is still a few months away, now feels like a good time to guess who might be in Lincoln Center this December, hoping to hear their name called. Some players are already fan favorites for the Heisman, but real college football fans know there are plenty of under-the-radar players who could make a splash this winter. Right now, Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr is the favorite at +750 odds. Carr had a great first season as the starter for the Fighting Irish, leading them to a 10-2 record, even if they didn’t beat any top teams. Last year’s drama about whether Notre Dame would make the CFP took attention away from Carr’s strong play, and things looked even worse when the school decided not to play in a bowl game. Still, Carr has a real shot at another big season, especially since Notre Dame’s schedule is tougher this year, which could help them get into the CFP.
Another name to watch, though not as high on the list as CJ Carr, is Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. His sophomore year wasn’t as strong as his freshman season, but he still put up good numbers. After seeing what he could do with veteran quarterback Will Howard, it wouldn’t be a surprise if current OSU quarterback Julian Sayin helps Smith make a run at becoming the first true wide receiver to win the Heisman since DeVonta Smith. Speaking of Sayin, he’s also in the Heisman conversation after finishing fourth last year.
In his first year as quarterback, Sayin showed he could manage games well, which helped Ohio State start 12-0. He faced some tough losses to Indiana and Miami at the end of the season and didn’t play his best in those games. Still, with Jeremiah Smith returning and former LSU wide receiver Kyle Parker joining the team, the Buckeyes should be in good shape, and Sayin will have another chance to prove himself as a champion and Heisman contender. With the amount of talent this fall, we’re in for a spectacular season of college football and an even better Heisman race.
