What 2026 Has in Store for a Saints 26-Year-Old Quarterback

NFL

The New Orleans Saints struggled in 2025, finishing 6-11 and last in the NFC South. The team has not made the playoffs since 2020, when they fell in the NFC Divisional Round. New Orleans had begun the season 1-10, struggling to find any success on both offense and defense. The reins were eventually handed to quarterback Tyler Shough, who finished the season for the Saints and went 5-4 as a starter. Head coach Kellen Moore would also take over the play-calling duties, as the team was able to end the season on a high note despite a rough first half of the year. Looking ahead in 2026, results could turn around for the organization under their young quarterback.

Shough started in nine games, throwing for 2,384 yards, 10 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The Saints drafted their rookie quarterback in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, with the 40th overall pick. The 26-year-old was not expected to take the starting role in his first season, but the series of losses and frustration gave him the opportunity. Fans were warned to be patient, but he proved he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL, flashing in areas rookies tend to struggle in. The state of the roster as well did not favor Shough, who, despite not having a great amount of help, still was able to earn some wins and make some noise. Now, this upcoming season could be the breakout year Saints fans have been craving at the quarterback position for years.

Shough was fan-voted the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, making him a great candidate to have a fantastic 2026. New Orleans upgraded their supporting cast, adding running back Travis Etienne Jr. to take over the rushing attack. Shough has shown that he also has the ability to run the ball, averaging 20 yards per game last season, making the running game strong and one to potentially dominate opposing defenses. Wide receiver Jordan Tyson will also now be at the disposal of the young quarterback, as the Saints drafted him with the eighth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The former Arizona State Sun Devil was a major contributor in college, catching for 711 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Tyson and Shough will now be able to develop as a potential young powerhouse duo for years to come. The odds point in Shough’s favor going into next season, with all the potential to have a breakout year.
