What 28-Year-Old Star Defender’s Departure Means for the 2026 New York Giants

NFL

Last season, The Idea of Dexter Lawrence exiting New York seemed unbelievable. Lawrence was the anchor of a talented defensive line and seemed to want to be a Giant for life, even having the New York Giants logo tattooed on himself. However, as of Saturday night, news broke that Lawrence has been traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. The departure of a big name like this is definitely sending shockwaves through New York.

Lawrence wasn't just another defender on the Giants' defense. The 28-year-old was the Giants' best defender over the last three seasons. He has made a name for himself as a top defensive tackle in the NFL. His ability to take on matchups and stuff the run game is second to none, and forcing double teams has helped out his teammates beside him. Without him, Big Blue will be losing possibly the most important presence on the defense. Coaches on opposing teams have had game plans centered on Lawrence to figure out how to establish the run. With the sudden departure all of a sudden, there is a huge hole in the middle of the interior defense.

One of the biggest impacts of Lawrence going his separate way will be felt from the Giants' edge rushers. With no double team needed on the inside anymore, teams will throw them at players like Brian Burns, who led the team in sacks last season. This could damage the Giants' pass rush scheme as a whole. With this news, the Giants may have to go out and possibly change some of their draft priorities since the 28-year-old got traded before the NFL Draft. This means adding on the defensive line may become more of a priority, cutting out first-round names on the offensive side like Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Love from the Giants ' draft board. Beyond draft changes, Lawrence’s departure will quite possibly create a huge loss in terms of leadership. He is one of the most respected guys in the Giants' locker room and sets the example for many young players with his work ethic. Losing a name like this could impact the Giants' chemistry on defense.

The good news is that moving on from Dex will free up a ton of cap space for the team. This money could be thrown across multiple positions to help strengthen parts of the roster. While Lawrence is gonna be a huge loss, he will be turning 29 next season, and his prime will soon be coming to a close. Giants fans can hopefully look forward to a younger guy to take his spot, but replacing somebody of the 28-year-old’s nature is a tough task. For a team looking to bounce back next season, losing one of their best players could be costly if they don't take the correct steps to recover.
