What a Healthy 26-27 Season Means for a 28-Year-Old NY Rangers Defenseman
In a little over a month, the New York Rangers will play hockey once more. Whether you feel confident or not, a rebranded defense comes into MSG to try to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again. With an upgraded second pair of Sean Durzi and Marcus Petterson, fans can expect some defense outside of the first pair for once. In a season where there's little room for error in a big-time bounce back, key Rangers will need to stay healthy if they’re to have a shot at the postseason, and that includes one of their best players on the ice.
While defense has never been anything to brag about on the New York Rangers, Adam Fox has certainly remained their best defender over the last few seasons. After securing a Norris Trophy in 2021, fans have watched him lead this defense in both the regular season and the postseason. As spectacular as he’s been, the New York native hasn’t had the best luck the last few seasons, missing significant time due to injury. From a knee-on-knee injury in late 2023 to an MCL strain in 2024, followed by a left-shoulder injury in 2025, it’s been quite some time since a healthy season was recorded for the 28-year-old. Despite missing significant time over the last few seasons, the stats alone show why Fox remains one of the Blueshirts' most important players on the ice. In a time when defense must not fail, just how important is a healthy season for Fox?
Looking back at the Rangers' unfortunate 25-26 season, Fox was limited to just 55 games and continued to skate as a point-per-game player. With nine goals and 44 assists last year, he just missed out on making the U.S. Olympic roster and joining a gold-medal-winning team. Still, it doesn’t distract fans from how valuable he remained while skating alongside Vladislav Gavrikov last year. Offensively, it’s hard to find someone who does it like Fox. Although fans have their hopes high when Albert Šmits is ready for this league, they still have a long way to go before finding a replacement skater. The most notable stat while their star defenseman was missing was their 8–16-3 record throughout those 27 games. It may be an exaggeration to say their last-place finish in the Eastern Conference was primarily due to their best defender being off the ice, but their +11 goal differential compared to their -14 without him may say otherwise. Not only can a healthy season from Fox give this team a better chance at bouncing back, but the rebranded defense could be just what he needs as well.
With an upgraded top four at their disposal, the Rangers certainly solved their defensive problem this offseason. Fox will no doubt continue skating with Gavrikov, a pair that certainly proved to be a shining light in a season of darkness. Outside of the first pair, if Durzi and Petterson skate with some chemistry, they may have themselves a team in front of Igor Shesterkin. A full season of all of them and it puts the Rangers in good shape, hoping to at last stop making Fox their anchor of the blue line. A big season approaches for the Rangers' alternate captain, and if luck is indeed on his side, this team may fight for a playoff spot.
