What Are Three Clubs Rodrygo Could Sign for?
Rodrygo appears to be seen as surplus to Xabi Alonso after the Brazilian only played in three Club World Cup matches, starting once. At only 24, Rodrygo is yet to reach his physical peak and has proven he can perform on the biggest stages. Earlier this summer, I suggested that Los Blancos figure out what to do with Rodrygo quickly, but this didn’t happen; however, they can still sell the explosive winger for a hefty price. Here are three clubs that could sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich let regular starter Leroy Sané leave this summer and are looking for a new option on the left wing. Their other regular, Kingsley Coman, is 29 and is prone to injury. The German giants are reportedly pursuing Liverpool’s Luis Díaz and Milan’s Rafael Leão. Rodrygo would be the more expensive choice but is ultimately the best one. He’s younger than Díaz and Leao and more explosive. Additionally, Rodrygo could play centrally while Jamal Musiala recovers from his injury. The move is pricey, but Bayern haven’t paid for a big transfer yet and are getting good money from the sale of Mathys Tel to Spurs. At full strength, Bayern could have Rodrygo and Alphonso Davies speeding down the left side with Musiala and Harry Kane playing centrally, not to mention Michael Olise, who is dynamic on the right side. This signing could create Europe’s most dangerous attack, an option worth pursuing for Bayern.
Liverpool
Somehow, the defending Premier League champs are still active. Liverpool has already signed Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, but remains active in the market. A deal for Rodrygo probably cannot happen if Díaz stays, but if Rodrygo joins Liverpool, watch out. Not only would Liverpool be adding an elite left winger, but they would also be investing in a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. With Rodrygo, Liverpool would become the favorite to win every competition they play, if they aren’t already. Liverpool would also have Ekitike, Wirtz, Cody Gakpo, and Rodrygo long-term. Any team can win once, but to sustain winning over a long time isn’t easy. Liverpool can improve their chances of doing so with this signing.
Chelsea
This move doesn’t make tons of sense, but neither have many of Chelsea’s moves. Fresh off winning the Club World Cup, Chelsea should not have any shortage of cash. The Blues are expected to part with some players, such as Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, which could free up more money. They already signed Jamie Gittens and have Pedro Neto; however, Neto can play on the right, and Gittens is only 20, so he has time to grow and doesn’t need to start immediately. A few months ago, they had to scratch and claw their way to Champions League football; now they have one of the most attractive projects in football. Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo, and Cole Palmer are all elite in the midfield. The backline is young and growing, and the Blues seem to have struck gold with João Pedro. Signing Rodrygo may not make Chelsea’s attack the best in the World, but it’d be undoubtedly elite. Chelsea is one of the few clubs that can afford a player of Rodrygo’s status and should take a swing at signing him, given their recent momentum.
