What Can Anthony Edwards Improve to Take the Next Leap?
With the Timberwolves having officially been eliminated from the 2025 NBA Playoffs, it’s time for the team and its players to look forward to the future. As for Anthony Edwards, the star of the team, this may prove to be the biggest offseason of his career. After back to back Western Conference Finals appearances, and having failed to move on to the NBA Finals in both outings, this offseason may very well determine if the young star can take the next leap and get over that hump to become an NBA Champion. What can Anthony Edwards improve? The short answer, his postgame.
In just a few years, Anthony Edwards has become one of the best players in the NBA, with many already claiming that, at just 23 years old, he could be the face of the league. His ability to get to fly through the air and get to the rim has already made him one of the best drivers of basketball in the league, and his improvement in his three-point shooting, making roughly four threes a game on 40 percent shooting, has also made him a major threat from deep. However, it’s his mid-range game that seems to have taken a back foot. If Ant-Man can develop a post-game, it could bring about the next evolution of his game.
Having a post-game allows a player to drastically slow down the game. If Anthony Edwards can develop a post game, it would allow him to dictate the pace and flow of the game while helping him to get into a rhythm himself as opposed to throwing up threes when an opening arises. In this scenario, a post game could also act as a failsafe/go-to move when he desperately needs a bucket. This could prove an extremely effective option in crunch-time situations to ensure that he has complete control of the outcome of the game. NBA star Paul George recently proclaimed a similar sentiment when he stated on his podcast, “Where I think Ant’s gotta get better at, he’s gotta develop a post game,” George said. “Where he can let the game slow down, he can get to one dribble and raise up and shoot. I think that helps a player get into a rhythm a lot better when he starts closer and he doesn’t have to worry about bringing two defenders to the ball to try to get free.”
As mentioned earlier, while Ant-Man is a great driver of the basket and a perimeter shooter, a post game would make his game more unpredictable and deadly. This would put even more pressure on defenders to counter his moves, leading to an added focus on him and thus opening up more good looks for his teammates. For a player who is already deemed a superstar by many, and a potential candidate for face of the league, adding another element to his game such as a post game could bring Anthony Edwards over the hump and not only solidify these statements, but help him capture his first title as well. The option is there for Ant-Man to take it; the question is, will he?
