What Can Fans Expect from the Devils vs. Islanders This Upcoming Season?

NHL

The Devils head into their second preseason game with something to prove after a 5-3 loss against the Rangers. A showdown with the Islanders presents a chance for them to sharpen things up. Having dropped their first preseason contest, the team needs to show more cohesion, especially in transition, defensive structure, and puck management. We can expect coach Sheldon Keefe to lean heavily on veterans and core players to set the tone, while prospects will play to prove they deserve a spot on the roster.

Bigger stars such as Jesper Bratt or Nico Hischier could likely carry much of the offensive load against the Islanders, pushing to generate scoring chances early against a weary Islanders defense. New Jersey will also be watching for improvements from the blue line. Especially from players like Dougie Hamilton, who was out for a lot of last season due to a lower-body injury. He could be utilized to clean up lapses that allowed too many odd-man rushes in the previous game. Plus, there is still uncertainty surrounding Luke Hughes, who has yet to sign his new contract, leaving questions about how the defense will ultimately shape up when the regular season begins.

Goaltending will be a key factor in this upcoming game. It could provide clarity on who will protect the goal for the Devils once the regular season kicks off, and how the team handles defensive lapses in front of them. Also, pay attention to line chemistry; preseason is the last chance to shake out combinations before official rosters are locked and they make their way into the regular season. The Islanders bring a heavy, structured style of play that often frustrates opponents. Their defensive-first approach, anchored by goalie Ilya Sorokin, makes them a perfect test for the Devils’ fast-paced offense. Preseason or not, the Islanders’ ability to shut down scoring chances will give New Jersey a clear sense of how their offensive systems are holding up under pressure.

Tonight’s matchup is another step in the Devils’ preparation for the 2025–26 regular season. From stars sharpening their game to young prospects battling for roster spots, there’s plenty on the line. Going against the Islanders, who are a disciplined opponent, the Devils will be looking for progress in all areas. Between scoring depth, defensive stability, and reliable goaltending, they have a lot to work towards. Win or lose, it’s about laying the groundwork for when the games start to count.
