What Can the Rangers Get from Their Unlikely Trade Partner?

NHL

The trade deadline may be weeks away, but the New York Rangers have wasted no time preparing. While the obvious departure will be Artemi Panarin, it seems he's not the first to depart. Sources tell us that the Blueshirts are really close to the first move in their retooling, and that it's coming from one of the most unlikely teams. When it comes to the Rangers and Islanders, you wouldn't very much think of a trade between these two, though it seems that's exactly what's about to happen. As unreal as it seems, it's not the biggest move of the season, but it's certainly a start for the retooling Rangers as they work out a deal to send Carson Soucy to their New York rivals. While not much of a bidding war at all, what can the Rangers expect in return for this defenseman?

With three goals and five assists so far this season, Carson Soucy began as quite a surprise for the Blueshirts. Though nothing to brag about, Soucy certainly played his part well, but sadly, he looks to be departing very soon. Fortunately for Soucy, he won't have to move quite far and will get his chance to play for a team that has been quite surprising this season. Just acquiring their first overall pick, Matthew Schaefer, the Islanders have certainly looked like a playoff team more than halfway through the season. The departure from Sheary also ensures the Rangers' young defenseman have their time on ice. A nice start for the Rangers in retooling, though it's safe to say fans shouldn't expect very much in return.

The New York Rangers acquired Carson Soucy from the Vancouver Canucks on March 6th, 2025, for a third-round pick. Something to remember is Soucy is a rental now, though, meaning it's very likely to be a fourth-round pick this time around. Perhaps a fourth is more fair, but let's see if he's improved his game since coming to the Rangers enough to win them a third. It's been quite frustrating for Ranger fans, giving up a third to acquire Soucy in what seemed to be a lost season at the time, and trading him away for a fourth may not get very much excitement, but it seems to be for the best. Although nothing is finalized at the moment, a mid-round pick would seem to make the most sense, and fans may not have to wait very long to find out. The deadline is approaching, and the Rangers have officially begun selling; only time will tell what other moves these Blueshirts have in store.
