What Does the First Jaguars Depth Chart of 2025 Look Like?
As the NFL season approaches, the Jacksonville Jaguars have begun to shape their roster after releasing their first unofficial depth chart on Monday. The Jaguars, a team whose roster was depleted and lackluster in the 2024 campaign, will look to have the 2025 unit bounce back from their struggles. Following free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft, the Jaguars have added many new names to the roster as they enter their first season under new head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone. Big decisions will come soon for this squad, as Coen will need to determine the position battles and make roster cuts before the season begins on September 4th.
The first player on the depth chart that caught many people’s attention was two-way athlete Travis Hunter, who played both wide receiver and cornerback in college. Heading into training camp, many wondered whether Coen would allow Hunter to play both sides of the ball on an NFL level. Following the release of the depth chart, Travis Hunter is listed as a starting wide receiver alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and Dyami Brown, while being listed as a backup cornerback behind fifth-year Tyson Campbell and second-year Jarrian Jones. It is apparent that Coen and the Jaguars initially prefer Travis Hunter’s offensive capabilities over his defense. To likely keep him healthy through a grueling season, Hunter will be playing a majority of offensive snaps compared to defense, barring an injury.
One position on the defensive side of the ball that the Jacksonville Jaguars will need to determine as training camp continues is their safeties. On the initial depth chart, the Jaguars listed the safeties with uncertainty about who would be the starter. Their safety room consists of tenth-year Eric Murray, former Green Bay Packers’ Darnell Savage, homegrown veteran Andrew Wingard, and third-year Antonio Johnson. There are also some backups to keep in mind, such as sixth-year Daniel Thomas, and rookies Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig, Caleb Ransaw, and Rayuan Lane III. Considered one of the most competitive rooms on this Jaguars team, no player in the group has created separation from another in training camp. Coen and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile will have to give these players some challenges to decide who makes the starting roster and who does not.
The offensive position that many need to keep an eye on as this Jaguars team heads into the campaign is their running back room. Led by Clemson veteran Travis Etienne Jr., it is expected that he will share the majority of snaps with breakout Tank Bigsby, creating a one-two punch for the Jaguars. However, the rookies in the room have made some noise in training camp. This includes Virginia Tech’s Bhayshul Tuten, Syracuse alumni LeQuint Allen Jr., and Arkansas back Ja’Quinden Jackson. The coaching staff will need to size down the running back room before the season starts, which will create some fierce competition between these rookies to see who makes the 53-player roster.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will continue to release more depth charts as training camp continues. Head coach Liam Coen will size down the roster as the preseason approaches and the position battles become more apparent. On the bright side for this Jaguars team, more competition means more talent. The Jaguars have a lot of potential sitting on this roster that is eager to prove themselves and earn a spot to play in the regular season.
