What Does the Latest Injury to a 2024 Gold Medal Winner Mean for Her 2025 Season?

Last night, during the Concacaf W Champions Cup match against Monterrey, Washington Spirit FC’s forward, Trinity Rodman, left the game in great pain. Rodman was excited to re-enter the pitch at the beginning of this month after recovering from a recurring knee injury. Since then, Rodman has played with vigorous passion and strength; so much so, on Wednesday, the USWNT recognized this and recalled her back into their roster. The 23-year-old, her fans, and coaches were greatly excited to see her return, but during last night’s game, Rodman fell to the floor in great pain as she grasped her right knee.

Rodman’s injury occurred during the first half after competing for possession. She was carried off the field, unable to pick herself up, and many were left worried about the severity of her condition after seeing her walk across the field during halftime on crutches. This is truly a crushing moment for Rodman. Many of her coaches spoke about how excited they were to see her return to the pitch, but always followed with caution regarding her health. The USWNT head coach, Emma Hayes, shared the other day at a news conference that “I’m super excited to have Trin back with the group — but a healthy Trin, I think, is the most important thing.” So far, there has not been any report regarding the severity of her injury, but many hope it’s nothing that will keep her off the pitch permanently.

Rodman's 2026 soccer season looked bright, and although that can still be a possibility for her depending on the status of her injury, what will the rest of her 2025 season look like? Rodman’s recent call-up from the USWNT was a joyous moment for her since she has been unable to play with them since this past April. Her call-up showed many that she was getting back into her routine as a player. Most likely, she will be unable to play with them for the rest of her year, but many should not lose hope for her expected return until she has released more information. For all we know, she could recover from last night’s injury before the start of the 2026 and be ready with the same passion she brought back in September. In regard to the NWSL, one can predict that Rodman will most likely remain benched in hopes of not injuring herself further. With the playoff season now in motion, and the end of the NWSL 2025 season in sight, the Spirits’ head coach, Adrián González may be focusing more on health than seeing her play. González has previously mentioned that, while she was recovering from her injury back in April, her health is of vital importance. Despite all that could be predicted, her attendance could easily change depending on the results from her medical scans that have yet to be announced. Until then, fans sit waiting, hoping for Rodman’s healthy recovery.
