What Is a Dream Offseason for the 26-27 Knicks
For the first time in 53 years, the New York Knicks are NBA Champions. After trailing by 16 points in the second quarter of the deciding game, New York battled back to secure the franchise's third championship and cap off the most memorable season in team history. Jalen Brunson cemented his legacy by scoring 45 points, setting a franchise record for the most points scored in a single Knicks playoff game, while earning the 2026 NBA Finals MVP Award. As celebrations continue throughout New York City, the focus for the organization will soon shift toward defending its title during the 2026 offseason.
The good news for New York is that the core responsible for bringing a championship back to Madison Square Garden remains largely intact. Brunson is under contract for three more seasons and appears to be a strong candidate for an extension following his historic NBA Playoffs run. OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Josh Hart are also under team control for the foreseeable future, giving the Knicks one of the strongest starting lineups in the NBA. While there are a few questions surrounding the starting five heading into the 26-27 season, the biggest focus will be on constructing a reliable bench unit capable of helping the team make another championship run.
Several key contributors from the bench are expected to draw attention during NBA Free Agency. Mitchell Robinson and Landry Shamet both elevated their play during the postseason and became the leaders of the second unit during New York's championship rotation. Robinson finally earned a championship ring after spending eight seasons with the organization and delivered what many consider one of the most important offensive rebounds in NBA Finals history. Shamet, meanwhile, established himself as a valuable floor spacer and perimeter shooter after finding stability with his sixth NBA team. The Knicks also face uncertainty regarding Jordan Clarkson, who signed for the veteran minimum in pursuit of a championship, and Jose Alvarado, whose future is up in the air if he accepts his player option for this offseason. If some of those veterans depart, New York could turn to younger players such as Tyler Kolek, Mohamed Diawara, Ariel Hukporti, and Pacome Dadiet to fill larger roles next season.
Even if the Knicks are unable to retain every member of their championship roster, there will be opportunities to strengthen the team through NBA Free Agency and the trade market. Frontcourt depth remains the organization's most pressing need, particularly behind Towns and Robinson. Jabari Smith Jr. could be an intriguing target due to his defensive versatility, shooting ability, and long-term upside. If Robinson were to leave, Daniel Gafford would provide a seamless replacement thanks to his rim protection and pick-and-roll effectiveness. Regardless of which direction the front office chooses, the Knicks enter the offseason from a position of strength. With Brunson, Anunoby, Bridges, Towns, and Hart still leading the way, New York has every reason to believe another deep NBA Playoffs run is well within reach.
