What Is the Biggest Issue with Goldberg’s Last Match?
Last night on Monday Night Raw, Goldberg’s last match was finally confirmed. The former World Heavyweight Champion will take on Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship on the 40th episode of Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12th in Atlanta, GA. These two had a moment at the Bad Blood Premium Live Event last October that set up this match. Goldberg has already announced last year that he would wrestle one final match in 2025 before hanging up the boots, which makes it all the more confusing as to why the World Heavyweight Championship is on the line in this match.
Most wrestling fans know that the former WCW Champion played college and professional football in Georgia. So, this will be a fitting end to his wrestling career by performing one more time in a state that means so much to him. Goldberg is looking to call himself a champion one more time. However, this match should not have the title on the line. It does nothing for the WWE to put the championship on Goldberg because it will ruin the momentum that Gunther and Jey Uso have built since the start of the year, as the two rivals have fought for the championship throughout 2025. The Ring General recently won the championship back from Uso, meaning it is way too soon for him to drop it to the WCW legend. Some fans have complained that Gunther has not been booked properly since his days as Intercontinental Champion. He was dominant as the IC champion and took on various types of wrestlers with different skillsets. The same has to happen for him during his second reign as World Heavyweight Champion, and he should not lose it to a guy who is already on the way out.
The decision to have the title on the line also affects Jey Uso. As mentioned above, Uso lost the championship to Gunther recently. Now, the former Intercontinental Champion is set for a Semifinals match against Cody Rhodes in the King of the Ring Tournament. If he wins, he can get another opportunity at Gunther at SummerSlam. However, Uso should not even be in this tournament because he should still be the champion today. It makes no sense for the Leader of the Yeet Nation to drop the belt to Gunther just so that the title can be on the line at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Jey Uso is the most over star in the company right now. The fans are behind him, and he deserved to have a longer reign as champion. Uso held the title for 51 days after winning it at WrestleMania. Now, all that momentum has cooled a bit because he does not have the championship and is in a feud with Seth Rollins and his new group. If Uso were champion, it would make the feud more compelling, as Rollins is holding the Money in the Bank briefcase and could cash it in on Uso at any time to win the championship. Now, for three weeks, the championship is going to revolve around Gunther and Goldberg.
Overall, the decision to put the championship on the line in Goldberg’s last match was an abysmal decision. Goldberg is on his way out and does not need to fight for a championship on the way out. It killed the momentum of both Jey Uso and Gunther, two stars who have fought for the championship throughout 2025. This feels more like a slap in the face and just another reach into putting on a match for the spectacle and nostalgia of it all, rather than building an actual storyline and giving it a rightful and fitting conclusion.
