What NHL’s Deal with DAZN Means for the League

NHL

In a move expanding the NHL’s overseas outreach, the NHL has signed a new subscription streaming deal with the service DAZN. DAZN is a sports streaming and subscription service that currently holds international rights to PGA Tour Pass and NFL Game Pass. Also, they have various deals with numerous soccer and fighting promotions. With this deal, however, DAZN will also have the NHL.TV rights in every country besides the United States, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

NHL.TV is the home of NHL content in many international countries outside of the nations listed previously. It hosts live broadcasts, replays, highlights, and more. ESPN and TNT Sports hold the rights to the NHL in the United States. Sportsnet and Prime Video hold the rights to the NHL in Canada. Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden also have NHL deals independent of NHL.TV. DAZN and NHL.TV will stream every NHL game, including the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals, on any device.

Under the new partnership, the NHL.TV will be available on DAZN as a standalone subscription or as an add-on to existing DAZN packages, across markets of operation in nearly 200 countries around the world. NHL.TV will be promoted and integrated across the DAZN platform to its base of more than 120 million registered sports fans. It is important to note that the 120 million users statistic includes individuals outside of the eligible NHL.TV countries. Fans will be able to access the NHL.TV on any device on which DAZN is available, including smart TVs, mobile devices, tablets, and gaming consoles, providing maximum flexibility. This move will likely drive up the international expansion of the NHL as a league.

The NHL has also scheduled two games in Sweden for its 2025 Global Series. This pair of games is between the Nashville Predators and the Pittsburgh Penguins. This pairing is smart due to Nashville’s Filip Forsberg and Pittsburgh’s Erik Karlsson and Rickard Rakell all being star Swedish players. With the deal with DAZN, the NHL allowing athletes to participate in the upcoming 2026 Winter Games, the NHL can continue to gain familiarity internationally and do so at an even faster rate than ever before.
