What the Future Holds for This Bears TE
The Chicago Bears have had quite an exciting offseason, including a very interesting draft class for new head coach Ben Johnson. With the Bears’ 10th overall pick in the first round, they selected tight end Colston Loveland. The selection would be a huge shocker to Bears fans, as the Michigan tight end wasn’t on many people’s draft boards for Chicago. The reason for much of the shock stems from the fact that the Bears have already had their home-grown tight end for the past four seasons.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Bears would select tight end Cole Kmet in the second round. Kmet would go on to become the starter at the tight end position for the next four years, becoming a reliable target for a variety of different Chicago quarterbacks in that span. While Kmet may not be statistically a league-leading tight end, he has proven himself as a solid starter who can both block and score touchdowns. His best season would come in 2023, totaling 719 receiving yards and six touchdowns. While his production has been solid for Chicago, his full potential may have been limited because he has played with ten different starting quarterbacks in his five seasons with the Bears. With quarterback Caleb Williams now leading the Bears with a very positive future ahead of him, why did Chicago decide to draft a possible Kmet replacement?
Loveland would have an impressive college career with Michigan, even winning a National Championship with a high-powered offense. While the draft pick may look like a replacement for Kmet, the former Wolverine will provide the Bears with a new offensive duo for Williams to work with. The two tight end personnel has started to become a popular offensive scheme in the NFL, and with a head coach like Johnson, who likes to have an exciting offense, the pick makes more than enough sense. Williams not only gets another offensive weapon to work with, but the offense has the ability to keep a constant attack with the tight end position being able to use either Kmet or Loveland. The 2025 season is not only looking like a potential big year for the Bears but also a career year for Kmet, who’s looking to reach his full potential.
