What the Inevitable Return of a 25-Year-Old Linebacker Will Do for the Cowboys Defense

NFL

The Dallas Cowboys' defense had faced a lot of scrutiny in the beginning part of this NFL season, and rightfully so. With Dak Prescott having to play like an MVP to keep games in reach for them, the need for this Dallas defense to improve is vital for success. Granted, their last encounter against the Jets in New York showed promise, as they were able to force a fumble and apply pressure on Justin Fields throughout the game. Although the Cowboys are currently missing a few players, DeMarvion Overshown, the cornerstone of this Dallas defense, is expected to return soon.

The return of Overshown represents not only the comeback of a key player for the Dallas defense but also the emergence of a new leader. It was clear that he would assume a leadership role following the Micah Parsons trade to the Green Bay Packers, and he has shown this commitment even while sidelined. He was quick to connect with Kenny Clark, who came to the team as part of the trade involving Parsons. He has also remained on the sidelines, actively supporting his teammates during games, and this effort has not gone unnoticed. With Stephen Jones stating on the radio station 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that Overshown is nearing a return to practice and getting ready with the goal to play in November, the Dallas defense can finally look forward to better days.

What Overshown brings to the Dallas defense is speed, and lots of it. He is quick to the ball, being able to fill in the gaps quickly on a run play and be solid in coverage as well. Notably, Overshown can rush the passer from both the edge and the middle during a blitz, creating significant challenges for Philadelphia, as he demonstrated in their last matchup last season. Overshown's freakish athleticism is clearly evident, as he showcased it on Thanksgiving Day against the Giants. During that game, he tipped a pass and caught it, returning it for a touchdown. While it might take a while for him to get used to playing again due to the knee problems in both legs, a healthy Overshown is still one of the best and most exciting defensive players in the whole league.
