What the New York Giants Limited Cap Room Means for the Rest of the 2026 Free Agency

NFL

The New York Giants are near the bottom of the NFL in available cap space, currently holding the third-lowest total in the league. After nearly two weeks of free agency, and without handing out a major contract, they now sit with just $5.41 million in cap space remaining. Since the start of the offseason, the Giants have made some moves, though. The largest deals they have made are with former Bills linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and former Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely. Overall, New York has been active, adding eight unrestricted free agents, re-signing eight players, and signing three players who were released by other teams. While those moves have added depth, there are still clear areas the team needs to address.

One thing New York could do to free up cap space is to restructure some of its high-priced players' contracts. One person who is a prime candidate for this would be star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. The Giants would be able to save some of Lawrence's $18.5M salary by converting part of his salary to a signing bonus. This amount of saved money could be crucial to adding more talent.

It's important for New York to get comfortable with releasing some of their veteran players. This is something the Giants have already started doing by releasing former defensive captain Bobby Okereke, but they need to do more. If the Giants release kicker Graham Gano and offensive lineman Jon Runyan Jr., they could save the team approximately $13.75 million. Neither player appears to be essential moving forward, as Gano’s role has diminished, and Runyan struggled with consistency. Both present realistic options if the team is serious about creating cap flexibility. The Giants have been active in free agency and have positioned themselves to continue improving, but one major piece still appears to be missing. Limited cap space remains a significant obstacle for a team aiming to turn things around next season. If New York can make the right financial decisions and free up additional space, it could open the door for a key signing that elevates the roster. As the offseason continues, those decisions may ultimately determine how much progress the team can make heading into next year.
