What to Expect with Brian Schottenheimer Calling the Offense in Dallas

NFL

The new addition of head coach Brian Schottenheimer not only brings in a coach who is looking to build a brand new culture but also one who is prepared to call the shots on offense. Schottenheimer's last time with play-calling duties came at the end of the 2021 NFL season for the Jacksonville Jaguars with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Before that, his previous job was being the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks from 2018 to 2020, where in 2018, he led Seattle to the number one rush attack in the entire NFL. Now, the question for Dallas is, what should the Cowboys expect this upcoming season with their new head coach calling the offensive play calls?

Focused Run Game

Schottenheimer has let it be known in his media press conferences that he wants to establish a dominant run game. Dallas selecting Tyler Booker in this year's NFL draft to replace longtime Cowboy legend Zack Martin further backs up this statement. In his time at Seattle, it was designed as a running back group by committee, which is what Dallas is going to go through this season. The addition of offensive coordinator Klayton Adams brings a different element that Dallas has not had in a while at the coordinator spot: a coach who is considered a run game and offensive line guru. With Adams coming in and developing the young offensive line and Schottenheimer's background having an elite run game behind committee, a drastically improved run game is what Dallas is hoping for.

Explosive downfield plays

In Schottenheimer's first season as offensive coordinator in Dallas, Dak Prescott had his best season of his career to that point. Now he is looking to bring back the best version of Prescott and even brought him major help by trading for George Pickens, which helps this Dallas offense immensely. With the focus on trying to establish a dominant run game, Dallas can pair it with the perfect pass game by targeting the intermediate and deep passes down the field. It helps that Dallas has two of the best receivers to play this style of football with CeeDee Lamb and the aforementioned Pickens. The pass game will more than likely be similar to previous years, but with talent that has not been seen in Dallas at the receiver spot for a while, the downfield threat is as dangerous as ever.
