What to Look for as the Rangers Open the Second Half of the 2026 Season Against the Braves

MLB

The Texas Rangers are back after the mid-season break, heading to Truist Park to face the Atlanta Braves. Skip Schumaker's squad leads the American League West at 49-47, holding a 1.5-game edge over the Seattle Mariners. The division race has stayed tight all season, and the Rangers have finally moved back over .500 for the first time since April, when they were 14-13. Meanwhile, the Braves are surging in the National League East at 55-40, with a two-game lead over the Phillies. Texas will be tested early and often in this road series, and the bullpen and offense will need to deliver to widen the gap in the division.

Pitching and Quality Innings

The Rangers’ pitching will be a major factor in this matchup. Right now, they have their top three starters still healthy: Jacob deGrom, MacKenzie Gore, and Nathan Eovaldi. With Jack Leiter out for the foreseeable future and Kumar Rocker still a question mark every time he takes the mound, it will be up to the Texas ‘Big Three’ and the bullpen to keep games close. For the opener, former starter turned long-reliever Cal Quantrill is the probable pitcher against Atlanta’s potent offense. He has been solid so far, with a 3-1 record and an ERA just over three, and he has helped the team avoid turning to the bullpen too early. Tyler Alexander, Peyton Gray, Cole Winn, and the new all-star closer, Jacob Latz, will need to come up clutch, provide quality innings, and keep immediate pressure off the offense.

Offensive Firepower

The offense for Schumaker’s squad has proven time and time again so far this season that it can compete with the League’s best. With that being said, they’ve also shown they can have extremely anemic performances for lengthy stretches. For this series, the bats are definitely going to have to swing early and often to keep up with a talented Braves batting lineup. As stated earlier, the Rangers are going to be tested, and it doesn’t help that their first pitcher out of the break is future Hall of Famer Chris Sale. This year, the 37-year-old lefty is 9-6 with a 2.20 ERA and 117 strikeouts. He’s been extremely dominant this season, and the young Texas-based powerhouse will have to get used to his sidearm release and time their swings to get the ball in play and hopefully establish runs on the board. One thing Texas has been able to do this season is score runs through power hitting. When they’re hitting home runs and getting hits resulting in extra bases, they’re able to run up the scoreboard and relieve pressure on the bullpen. Two names to look out for to get the bats going are Joc Pederson and Jake Burger. These power hitters are elevating the Rangers' offense and leading in home runs so far this season: 15 for Pederson and 16 for Burger. To keep up with a Braves offense consisting of Matt Olson, Michael Harris II, and Ozzie Albies, the offense will have to be firing on all cylinders to give their team the best chance to get a series win in Atlanta.
