What to Look for as the Rangers Visit the Red Sox in a 2026 Three-Game Series

MLB

The Texas Rangers look to get above the .500 mark in what seems like forever this season as they travel to Boston to take on the skidding Red Sox. Sitting at 34-34, the Rangers are riding high as they’re fresh off a road series win against the Royals and are 7-3 in their last ten games. The same can’t be said for the Red Sox, as they’re 4-6 in their last ten games and are currently riding a four-game losing streak, as they were recently swept by the American League’s best, the Tampa Bay Rays. Fenway Park is one of the most historically prominent ballparks to play in, but the home team isn’t taking advantage of home-field advantage, as they’re 10-21 at home; they just can’t win at home. The Rangers, on the other hand, have a pretty decent road record, sitting at 17-20, which reflects their home record slightly, as they’ve got a 17-14 record at home. It’ll be interesting to see if the Red Sox can keep up with the high-velocity pitching and surging bats from the Rangers.

Pitching Matchups

June 12th is the first game of the series, and the Rangers will already be met with one of the league’s best arms this season as they take on veteran Sonny Gray. Gray, the 36-year-old from Smyrna, Tennessee, has been exceptional this season, as he’s carrying a 7-1 record with a 3.20 ERA. He’s struck out 44 batters and only walked 16. His latest performance was a winning effort against the rival New York Yankees, where he battled for just over six innings, allowed three runs, and struck out eight, but it was just enough for his team to get the win. While the Rangers’ hitters have a tough matchup on the mound, so do the Red Sox, as they’ve got Jack Leiter to face off against. Leiter isn’t having the best season, but in every performance, he shows promise. With a 3-5 record and a 4.69 ERA, he’s punched out 76 batters and issued 31 walks. One of the things to look for as Leiter takes the mound is how long he can actually stay on the mound. The 26-year-old has only reached seven innings pitched once this season, and he has the chance to reach that milestone against a subpar offense from Boston.

On Saturday, the 13th, fans will be excited to witness a classic pitchers' duel, as Jacob deGrom and Ranger Suarez take the mound for the Rangers and Red Sox. What’s interesting about this is that both pitchers share similar ERA’s, sitting at 3.18; deGrom has the upper hand here as he’s got a better record on the season, as he’s 5-4 and Suarez is 2-3. Lastly, on Sunday, the 14th, we get the Rangers’ fan favorite, Nathan Eovaldi, starting, and Connelly Early for the Red Sox. Eovaldi returns to his former stomping grounds as he looks to get back to his former all-star form and forget his last outing, as he took the mound on June 9th against the Royals but ended up taking a loss, as he allowed four runs in 5.2 innings pitched. He’ll look to bring his season record closer to even and get back to the seven-inning length he flashed multiple times in May.

Batting Matchups

Both of these teams have had anemic offenses this season, and the Rangers in particular, as they’ve fallen to a no-hitter and injuries have held this offense back. With Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford back in the lineup and Joc Pederson and Ezequiel Duran continuing to have excellent batting performances, the offense should be able to produce at a high level and put themselves in the middle of the mid-season postseason race the closer we get to the All-Star break. In this series, though, there are some players to keep an eye on against the starting pitchers for both teams. To start, Wilyer Abreu has had success against the young star Leiter and the veteran Eovaldi. In four at-bats, Abreu has notched an RBI, and against ‘Evo’, he carries a .429 average, with two home runs and two RBI to complement. The veteran outfielder Brandon Nimmo has had decent career stats against Gray, with a .385 average and two RBI in 13 at-bats. In two at-bats, Ceddanne Rafaela has a .500 average against deGrom. The newly signed Elias Diaz has average stats against Suarez, with a .278 batting average and an RBI in 18 at-bats. He’s also the only Rangers hitter who has faced Early, and he’s got one home run and two RBI in three at-bats.
