What to Make of Baltimore’s Bizarre Trade Blunder

NFL

The free agency frenzy is always a good time, with big names signing big contracts and old faces finding new places. However, the 2026 Free Agency cycle has been a rollercoaster for the Baltimore Ravens and fans of the franchise for a multitude of reasons. Fingers are being pointed, narratives being made, and no one knows what to believe except what NFL insiders are saying. My goal with this article is to break down everything that has happened in the past five days, try to make sense of it, and explain how it will impact the Ravens and the NFL as a whole.

Maxx Crosby is a Raven! Or Not?

Late on March 6th, 2026, news broke that the Ravens agreed to trade their first-round pick for the next two years to the Las Vegas Raiders for five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Baltimore was coming to terms with trading a first-rounder for a player for the first time in franchise history and was already taking off work in February for a Super Bowl parade. The next day, Crosby made a 12-minute video, thanking the city of Vegas for making him the player and man that he is, expressing his desire to retire a Raider. Crosby continued to shift his focus towards the RavensFlock, claiming he was going to give the team everything he had and to get the team where they wanted to be, Super Bowl Champions. Fan edits were made of Crosby wearing a potential new Ravens’ jersey, and that picture was made Crosby’s profile picture. Flash forward to Monday Night and Tuesday Morning, Crosby posted on his Instagram the views from his hotel room, looking over Baltimore City, with a perfect view of M&T Bank Stadium. The trade would be officially processed on Wednesday afternoon, pending the results of a Tuesday physical, and that’s when everything hit the fan.

Just before 8:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, the Las Vegas Raiders posted on social media that the Baltimore Ravens “pulled out” of the Maxx Crosby trade, and this was all Baltimore’s fault. All of a sudden, fans in Baltimore start freaking out about what happened. Some called it a case of “cold feet” for giving up two first-round picks, others had a feeling that Crosby was not on the right track in his knee rehab, and a few called it a trick play, forcing Baltimore to put their focus on how to afford Crosby and not any of their 23 unrestricted free agents. While it was not officially stated by anyone until Baltimore’s press conference on Wednesday, it was heavily speculated that Crosby did not pass the “future risk assessment” of his physical, just two months post-op from his eighth surgery in seven years. There was no official word from the Ravens until Wednesday afternoon, and no additional comment from the Raiders, but the “almost” Raven quickly got back on his private jet, deleted all Ravens-related social media posts, and returned to Vegas’ facility to continue his rehab.

Baltimore’s Plan B

After the Ravens backed out of the deal, their picks were returned, but the positional gap opened back up. Jaelan Phillips signed with Carolina, Rashan Gary was traded to Dallas, and former Raven Odafe Oweh signed with the Commanders. This left the 31-year-old edge rusher from Cincinnati, Trey Hendrickson, who was mulling over his options over the last few days, to sign a four-year deal worth up to $120 million with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday morning. According to Adam Schefter on the Pat McAfee Show, Hendrickson is happy to get his deal done and join the Ravens, but was under the impression that he was going to join Crosby on Baltimore’s defensive front. The situation is not ideal for either party, but this shows that Hendrickson and Crosby were meant to play together, and the signing of the former Bengal was not a quick pivot at the last second amid the failed physical from ‘Madd Maxx.’

Ploy for Linderbaum?

Some are calling this a trick play for former Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum. With a trade for Crosby, the Raiders would gain enough cap space to make a push for Linderbaum, but they needed to prevent the Ravens from re-signing him. By trading the star edge rusher, it opens up Vegas’ financials, ties up Baltimore’s money, forcing Linderbaum to walk and take the best offer on the table, which was Vegas’ massive $81 million deal. As a bonus for Vegas, if the front office knew Crosby would fail his physical, the trade would be rescinded, and Vegas would successfully steal Linderbaum from entertaining a matching offer from Baltimore and keep Crosby for themselves. It does seem like a stretch and a real “scumbag” move, but it would also be a huge IQ play.

Where Does This Leave Baltimore?

Immediately after the Ravens decided to back out of the deal, so many free agent deals were already decided. As of Wednesday afternoon, Baltimore has already lost an edge rusher, two tight ends, two safeties, a punter, a fullback, and their starting center. All these player departures hurt, but none more than the Tyler Linderbaum signing with the Raiders for a record-breaking three-year, $81 million contract, a whopping nine million more per year than the next highest-paid center. Under the impression that they would have to pay Crosby and potentially Hendrickson, the Ravens struggled to find the money to re-sign the players who had garnered over $300 million in total contract value in the last two days. The Ravens did restructure Lamar’s $74.5 million cap hit down to about $30 million. However, it will not reverse Dre’Mont Jones to New England, Alohi Gilman going to Kansas City, Linderbaum to Vegas, Charlie Kolar to the Chargers, or Isaiah Likely, Jordan Stout, Ar’Darius Washington, and Patrick Ricard to the New York Giants with former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

On the bright side, the Ravens are left with a top-tier pass rusher, their 2026 and 2027 first-round picks, and ultimately dodged a bullet by avoiding the extreme health risk that would be bringing someone who has yearly surgeries into the building. Many are calling the Ravens “scumbags” for backing out of the deal, but this is the business. The front office most likely believed that the health risk was not as large, but would not know 100% until they had their in-house doctors check him out. The finger can be pointed right back at Vegas, by underselling or lying about the progress of Crosby, the amount of cartilage actually in his knee, and what level of risk he would contain. There is no way of truly knowing unless you were on the phone call or in the room with the involved parties.

Who is at Fault for the Crosby Collapse?

If there is any fault, I believe it can be placed on either team, based on future information. Trades and free agent signings rarely fall through, especially ones of this magnitude, but they have happened. If it truly was a failed physical with the future risk assessment as the deciding factor, then it is just Baltimore’s due diligence to call it off, which is totally acceptable and part of the business. Either the Raiders did not fully disclose the severity of Maxx Crosby’s injury, or the Ravens, upon looking at the medical records, decided it was not worth it anymore. Maybe EDC did get cold feet and changed his mind about the picks, or maybe the Raiders created a backdoor loophole plan to screw the Ravens over. There is no way to truly know. The only thing that is for sure is that life moves on, free agency continues, and other teams will be hesitant to trade for Maxx Crosby or trade with the Baltimore Ravens until more information becomes public, if it ever does.
