What We Learned from the Rams Preseason Win Over the Cowboys

NFL

The Los Angeles Rams won 31-21 over the Dallas Cowboys in their first preseason game, putting on a strong showing from start to finish. Despite sitting its starters, the team appeared to be in control, with Bennett at quarterback and excellent defensive execution. The energy on the sidelines was just as noticeable, with veterans advising younger players and keeping the pace high. Although it was a preseason game, it felt like a statement about the depth and culture that the Rams are developing.

Stetson Bennett Looked Confident

Stetson Bennett delivered an impressive performance, demonstrating to both the fans and the coaching staff why he belongs. He finished with 188 yards, two touchdowns, and a 16-for-24 passing line, setting a new career high for passing yards in a quarter with 114. Bennett appeared relaxed, whether he was standing tall in the pocket or extending plays on the move. He distributed the ball to several receivers, including a beautiful deep ball to Xavier Smith, who finished with 55 yards. While an interception on a 50/50 ball was a minor flaw, Bennett's calmness, decision-making, and ability to generate plays came through.

Blake Corum & Company Produced

Running back Blake Corum continues to establish himself as a reliable weapon in the Rams' backfield, and his solid performance during training camp carried over into the game. He scored twice on six carries, averaging four and a half yards per rush for a total of 32 yards. Corum ran behind an offensive line that created clean pockets and open lanes, allowing him to showcase his vision and speed. This game also showed that Corum could develop into a consistent red zone threat and contributor throughout the season. Cody Schrader also impressed with 59 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown, and fourth-round pick Jarquez Hunter stood out, showing off his speed and aggressiveness. This running back group appears to be looking forward to giving opposing defenses headaches.

Defense and Depth Are Shining

The Rams' defense limited Dallas to just six points in the first half, all of which came from field goals. Rookie OLB Josaiah Stewart recorded his first NFL sack, and cornerback Cam Lampkin made his first career interception early in the second half. The pass rush was relentless, the secondary tackled well, and frequent three-and-outs prevented the Cowboys from getting any rhythm. The Rams eased up towards the end of the game, but the defensive depth appears to be positioned to make an impact. Even without their starters, the Rams' young players are seizing opportunities, veterans are setting the tone, and the coaching staff is getting a true look at the depth they’ve built. If this performance is any indication, the Rams will enter the regular season with a roster that’s both talented and prepared to compete.
