What Went Down at the 2025 US Women’s Amateur?

On Aug. 9th, the PGA announced via Instagram that both Megha Ganne and Brooke Biermann would compete at Bandon Dunes for the 2025 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Ganne, a twenty-one-year-old senior at Stanford and native of Holmdel, New Jersey, made her debut in 2021 as the youngest match-play fielder at the U.S. Women’s Open. Since then, she has had many wins in her collegiate career with a program record of 71.29. A few notable achievements include being a member of the winning team at the 2022 Curtis Cup and winning the 2024 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Team Championship.

Biermann, a graduate from Michigan State University, with a promising career of her own, was a part of the first-ever team to win the NCAA regional during her time at MSU. By the time she graduated, she had a career score average of 72.96, the third best in program history. Biermann was able to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship by winning the Missouri Golf Women’s Amateur Championship. She proved that she is one of the top future stars in women’s golf.

The 2025 Semifinals made history, being only the third time in 125 years that both matches went to extra holes. Additionally, for both players, this was their first championship match. Biermann had snatched the victory against Lyla Louderbaugh after Louderbaugh missed the bogey on her first extra hole at the par-four 10th. Though her chances seemed to be dwindling, Ganne was able to make a comeback when she unexpectedly stole the win against 19-year-old Ella Scaysbrook

On Aug. 10th, both victors took to the field to compete for the U.S. Women’s Amateur title. However, anticipation seemed to dwindle as the match continued. For most of the match, Ganne stayed in the lead, scoring the first birdie on the par-four first. She then proceeded to dominate her competition, winning holes 12-14 to make a three-up lead.

The match ended with Ganne walking away with her first Robert Cox Trophy. This surprised many. Ganne went from being the clear underdog in her matchup with Scaysbrook to completely blowing away audiences with her dedication and commitment to victory. With her first championship win under her belt, the biggest question is what is next for this promising player’s future?
