What WWE’s Abandonment of ‘Edge’ Trademark Means for Adam Copeland

WWE

All Elite Wrestling star and professional wrestling legend Adam Copeland, or simply ‘Cope,’ is known to many fans by his name from his time in WWE as Edge. Copeland left WWE in the summer of 2023 to join AEW at WrestleDream. His move surprised many fans, especially because he was using his real name, Adam Copeland, in AEW instead of his famous ring name, Edge. In time, he started using ‘Cope’ as a simpler way to announce himself. Edge was a very popular and successful wrestler in WWE. He won many championships and is considered to be one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. When he left WWE, fans wondered if he would continue to use the name Edge or start fresh with his real name.

One reason fans were curious is that WWE owns the rights to the name ‘Edge’ through a trademark they filed years ago. This means WWE could stop others from using the name in wrestling or related events. However, recently WWE abandoned this trademark. This means they gave up their rights to the name “Edge,” and now Copeland can decide whether to keep using it or switch to his real name. Some believe he might start using the name Edge again, while others think he will stick with his real name, Adam Copeland.

The situation is a bit complicated. While WWE has given up its trademark for ‘Edge’ in terms of wrestling performances, they still have the right to the name for merchandise like clothing, hats, and shoes. This means that legally, the name ‘Edge’ is not fully available for wrestling use, but fans still often call Copeland ‘Edge’ because it is a popular and nostalgic name. Many fans feel that ‘Edge’ is a cooler name and a big part of his legacy, so they continue to use it even now. The use of the name can probably start bringing more old-school fans to watch the AEW product. Fans are eager to see the Edge and Christian reunite one last time. He was recently betrayed by FTR and him returning as Edge will make an all-time moment in AEW history.
