When Will Brock Purdy Sign His Contract Extension?
It seems the 49ers organization can never produce a contract negotiation stream early into the offseason process. With the 49ers, there is always at least some anticipation and rumors that need to build up before the news about a contract is official. A similar situation happened with Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. However, recent contract negotiations have been much different as the front office understands the urgency with which deals need to be done. Tight End George Kittle signed an extension last week, and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir signed an extension during this past season.
Let’s not forget about the biggest contract negotiation for the organization this summer, though. Quarterback Brock Purdy is seeking a contract near the top of the quarterback market. The 49ers missed the window to look at the possibility of making Purdy expendable during the 2025 NFL Draft, so a contract agreement looks to be inevitable. Recent reports have said they are very close to a deal being made, and it could be north of $50 million annually, per Mike Jones. With these updates, San Francisco has learned from their past negotiation failures. The team can’t face or afford the possibility of a player holding out, especially at the most important position on the roster. Aiyuk held out last offseason, and the season couldn’t have started and ended worse for him and the team.
I can still understand the wait from the 49ers to get this deal done. As an organization, they are mortgaging their future on one player’s success. After this contract is complete, the team won’t have as much cap flexibility as before, and the John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan regime won’t have an excuse if Purdy proves to be undeserving of the contract. This decision comes with a lot of risk, with the roster turnover having already begun this offseason. However, it is a matter of when the deal will be done at this point in the negotiation process. If I had to predict, this contract will be finalized in the next couple of weeks, and Purdy will become the highest-paid player in franchise history while being paid similarly to Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
