Where Does the Giants Quarterback Room Stand After the Draft?
The New York Football Giants have spent a lot of time over the past year trying to rebuild their quarterback room. It’s been tough for them trying to figure out what their next steps are when it comes to deciding who the next quarterback will be. Originally, they had former quarterback Daniel Jones, whom they parted ways with last season. The Giants ended up bouncing back and forth between Tommy DeVito and former Giants backup quarterback Drew Lock, who was released once the season was over. Things took a turn for the worse last year in the quarterback room when they ended up pulling from the practice squad. This year, the room is already looking better than it has been in the last six years. The Giants have brought in three new quarterbacks while keeping DeVito on the roster.
The Giants decided this year that they wanted to start fresh but with a veteran. They brought in Russell Wilson, who played with the Steelers last season and took them to the first round of the playoffs. Since he has done so much work and proved that he can make plays happen on the field. He took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl several years ago. Many believe that there is hope with him and the Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll has decided to make Wilson this year's starter. Wilson only signed a one-year contract with the team.
Jameis Winston is considered to be the backup quarterback for this coming season. Next season, he will start, because the Giants gave him a two-year contract. As much as people like him, he will only play this year when Wilson is indisposed, which rarely ever happens. Winston is an experienced quarterback, which is what the Giants are looking for if their starter goes out. They’ve dealt with this the past few seasons, and this is something that Big Blue Nation is used to.
DeVito is still in because the Giants’ offense gives him an edge. He has been great when the offensive line has been able to pull through and protect their quarterback. In times of trouble, DeVito was the one who did the best he could to put the puzzle pieces back together. That said, the Giants kept him on for another year, just in case they need that extra body.
The last one in the quarterback room is Jaxson Dart, the former Ole Miss starter whom the Giants traded back in to get with the 25th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He is viewed as the future starter after Winston, DeVito, and Wilson's time in New York is over. The Giants are looking to develop the young quarterback. They felt that after seeing him at college, he would be their future quarterback.
These quarterbacks all play differently. However, this makes the Giants’ quarterback room look a little strange. It’s all in the management's plan to make things work between all of these players. They should be able to bring the Giants back to what they once were, a great team in the NFL.
