Which 2026 NHL Draft Prospect Will Fit Best in the New York Rangers Retool?
The first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs continues, and while Rangers fans continue to watch stress-free, they find themselves counting down the days until the lottery. Despite failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second consecutive season, an end-of-the-season surge by the youngsters gives New York fans some hope that this retool will go in the right direction. With the rising cap, the ability to build a contending team from free agency just got much harder, with almost every team just being able to afford to keep their own stars. Even if this stage is not a full rebuild, the best way to turn an NHL team into a contender now is building through the draft, and what better time for the Blueshirts to start than this offseason? As the Rangers head into this NHL Draft Lottery with a guaranteed top-five pick, let's take a look at a few targets that can fit in beautifully in this Rangers retool.
Caleb Malhotra
Starting with some nostalgia, Caleb Malhotra inherits some goal-scoring abilities the Blueshirts may need. Being the son of Manny Malhotra, a seventh-overall pick in 1998 selected by the Rangers, the Brantford Bulldog could be a potential fit in this New York retool. When you look at the son of someone known for his defense, you wouldn't expect such an explosion on offense, but Caleb seems to fit that very definition. Finishing his current season with the Bulldogs with 29 goals and 55 assists in 67 games, it's no surprise the Brantford center has risen immensely in the draft class. As of now, the Toronto native is committed to Boston University for the 2026-2027 season, and Ranger fans know well their history with prospects from Boston University. If the kid can use that offensive talent on the ice with these Blueshirts, the cheers for Malhotra may fill MSG once again after more than two decades. In the likely chance the New York Rangers don't pick first overall this Summer, their most likely position would be fourth overall, giving them a shot at taking a chance with the young center.
Gavin Mckenna
Now, we have one of the more obvious choices, the most likely first overall pick in this coming draft. One of the biggest factors in Gavin McKenna potentially hopping on the ice in MSG is the comparison between him and Artemi Panarin. Now, fans can agree that Panarin had an incredible career with the Blueshirts and was no doubt their best offensive forward on the ice for years. Before trading the 34-year-old to the Kings, the Russian winger was arguably the best playmaker for the New York Rangers for almost seven seasons. Mckenna looks to be the exact kind of player fans see in Panarin, the kind of threat on the ice that would certainly turn things around for these Blueshirts. With the younglings making the end of this previous season quite fun to watch, seeing the 18-year-old on the ice may just make these next few seasons very enjoyable.
Keaton Verhoeff
As mentioned by head coach Mike Sullivan last week, the Rangers are in serious need of another puck-moving defenseman. For a team that's been quite known for its defensive problems over the last few years, it would seem Keaton Verhoeff could fit quite well as a potential third overall pick. Finishing off his North Dakota Fighting Hawks season with six goals and 14 assists, the 17-year-old stands as an already smart player in each zone. Aside from Adam Fox, the Rangers still lack a defenseman of this caliber, despite a few defensive prospects approaching. With some time playing behind Fox, the six-foot-four defenseman could potentially develop quite well and turn into another quarterback on the Rangers' power play. If developed correctly, it could also open the possibility of a trade involving Fox, a player they'd surely make a good fortune on, benefiting their future immensely.
