Which Keeper Gives Wolves the Best Shot at Success?

Wolves find themselves in a position few clubs ever do as they look to solidify their squad for the upcoming season. While many teams struggle to find even one reliable goalkeeper, Wolves are fortunate to have two competing for the starting spot. Picking only one will be a decision that could shape the club’s future for years. One keeper will stay and the other could be sold, but which one will it be?

José Sá has been a consistent and reliable presence in goal for Wolves in recent seasons. A Portuguese international with national team experience, Sá brings composure and a deep understanding of the game to every match. Over the years, he's delivered countless crucial saves and helped keep Wolves up in the Premier League. His experience, leadership, and strong reputation have made him a solid figure over the years.

However, this season has been far from spotless. While Sá remains a steady figure between the posts, he has also committed a handful of costly errors. At 32 years old and entering the final year of his contract, Wolves now face a tough decision about whether to stick with experience or look ahead. In the 2024–25 Premier League season, Sá has made 65 saves and kept seven clean sheets in 28 appearances, but has also conceded 45 goals.

While Sá has held the spotlight for years, Wolves’ recent acquisition of Sam Johnstone signaled that change might be close. Known for his shot-stopping ability and composure under pressure, Johnstone arrived with confidence and a strong reputation from his time at Crystal Palace and West Brom. Statistically, he has impressed in limited matches, currently holding a higher save percentage than Sá this season. However, since he’s played far fewer matches, that number might make him look better than he really is right now.

Honestly, it’s a lot closer than most people think. Both keepers have their strengths, and each has contributed to Wolves this season and in years past. Johnstone shows potential and could still grow into a solid long-term option, but Sá brings something more. His experience, not only in the Premier League but also with the Portuguese national team, gives him an edge. Training alongside world-class talent, including Cristiano Ronaldo, has only sharpened his game and prepared him for high-pressure moments. For a club looking to build with confidence, Wolves should keep Sá.

Based on current market evaluations, Sam Johnstone's estimated transfer value ranges between six and a half million and nine million pounds. However, recent reports suggest that Wolverhampton Wanderers might be seeking around ten million pounds for his transfer. A fee closer to seven million pounds may be more realistic given his limited playing time. Selling Johnstone would leave Wolves with their current starter, José Sá, and backups Dan Bentley, the American, and Welsh international Tom King.

With Johnstone likely to be sold, Wolves can shift their focus to strengthening the rest of the squad. The money gained from his transfer could help address other key areas of need. With their current form, the team will aim to finish the season on a high. Next year, Wolves will look to hit the ground running and build on the momentum they've created.
