Who Improved the Most in the Premier League This Year?

The 2025-2026 Premier League season has brought plenty of surprises, from title contenders falling short to underdogs rising to new heights. Yet among all the storylines, one question stands out: which team truly improved the most this year? While many clubs have shown flashes of growth, three teams have made the most significant strides in performance, tactics, and mentality. Those being: Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United.

Aston Villa’s transformation under Unai Emery has been nothing short of remarkable. After narrowly missing out on a top-four spot last season, Villa have built on that foundation with a mix of consistency and tactical maturity. Emery’s disciplined defensive system and quick transitions have allowed players like Ollie Watkins to thrive, while new additions such as Pau Torres have strengthened the backline. Villa’s home record at Villa Park has also become one of the toughest in the league, earning them wins against top-six sides. Compared to where they were just two seasons ago, battling mid-table uncertainty, this version of Aston Villa is a team ready to consistently challenge for European competition.

Another team that has shown noticeable growth is Tottenham Hotspur. Under new management, the Spurs have developed a faster, more aggressive style of play that has revitalized their attack. Son Heung-min has stepped up as both a leader and goal-scorer, proving that the post-Harry Kane era doesn’t have to be one of decline. Their improved pressing structure and creative midfield play, led by James Maddison, have given them a new identity. While defensive inconsistencies still linger, Tottenham’s renewed energy and confidence have made them one of the most entertaining and unpredictable teams in the league.

Finally, Newcastle United has continued its upward climb following a strong finish last year. Bruno Guimarães is a creative engine in midfield. Alexander Isak’s departure from Newcastle United was a major blow, but it hasn’t stopped them from improving, as Eddie Howe’s side continues to adapt and find new ways to thrive without their former star striker. Even with injuries and fixture congestion, Newcastle has maintained a competitive edge and tactical discipline that mark them as one of the most improved squads in the Premier League. Their growth is a result of smart recruitment, unity, and the club’s long-term vision, a mix that continues to pay off.

Improvement can be measured in different ways: results, confidence, and identity. Aston Villa’s tactical stability, Tottenham’s attacking revival, and Newcastle’s resilience all represent different forms of progress. However, if one team stands above the rest this season, it’s Aston Villa. Their steady rise from mid-table obscurity to Champions League contention shows that true improvement is built on patience, structure, and belief. With Emery’s leadership and a squad full of hungry, disciplined players, Villa’s transformation is proof that the Premier League’s middle pack can rise, and rise fast, when vision meets execution.
