Who Is the Bigger Threat in the AFC West: Broncos or Chargers?

NFL

The AFC West has belonged to the Chiefs for seven straight years, but 2025 will not be an easy repeat. Both the Broncos and Chargers made key offseason moves that could challenge Kansas City for the division. Denver surprised many by making the playoffs last season, thanks to Bo Nix having a fantastic rookie year. Now, they’re aiming to build on that success with a stronger roster.

Bo Nix was a revelation for Denver last year, showing poise and leadership beyond his years. Under Sean Payton’s guidance, he developed into a steady starter who kept the offense moving efficiently. Denver also added running back J.K. Dobbins to boost their ground game and drafted rookie RJ Harvey from UCF to add youth and depth. Tight end Evan Engram and safety Talanoa Hufanga were brought in to strengthen key areas on offense and defense, and should have major impacts on the team's success.

The Broncos’ defense remains one of the league’s more physical and disciplined units, making them tough to beat. If their offense can build on last year’s progress, Denver could be a real threat in the division. They showed last season that they can win close games and grind out results when it counts. This combination of experience and new talent gives them momentum heading into 2025.

The Chargers lost J.K. Dobbins to Denver, but added running back Omarion Hampton out of UNC to help replace him. Wide receiver Mike Williams spent last season bouncing between the Jets and Steelers before making his way back to Los Angeles. Williams remains a key veteran presence with big-play ability when healthy. The Chargers also have receiver Ladd McConkey, who showed promise last year, and hope Quentin Johnston continues to develop. Justin Herbert remains one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, and second-year coach Jim Harbaugh hopes to build on last year's momentum.

Right now, the Broncos look like the more complete team ready to challenge the Chiefs. Denver’s momentum from last season and roster upgrades give them an edge in readiness. The Chargers have talent but face questions about overall offensive consistency. If the Broncos continue to improve, they could be the biggest threat to Kansas City’s reign.
