Who Should Be Appointed as Chelsea FC’s New Manager in 2026?

With the removal of Liam Rosenior as head coach of Chelsea FC, the organization's owners, BlueCo, need to decide on the next permanent manager.  Currently, Calum McFarlane is the interim head coach, finishing the season. Chelsea FC has had a high turnover of managers since 2022, when BlueCo. or Clearlake Capital bought the organization. New ownership has brought new strategy, new expectations, and new people ready to rise to the occasion and lead Chelsea to glorious results. Acquisitions are not always smooth, especially with the youngest team in the Premier League, retaining talent with high salaries and long-term commitments attaches demanding pressure.

Rosenior Downfall

Rosenior’s last two appointments as head coach were very successful at Hull City from 2022 to 2024 and RC Strasbourg from 2024 to 2026. He transformed Hull into a top-half championship side when Hull was one point above the relegation zone. Cultivated a patient build-up from the back, creating one of the divisions' most technical sides. At RC Strasbourg, under the BlueCo ownership group, the 41-year-old achieved historic success, leading the team to their first European qualification in 19 years and fielded the youngest starting team in Europe's top five leagues. The style of play maintained was a dominant possession based.

After only 107 days in charge, Rosenior ended his tenure after five consecutive Premier League defeats with no goals in any of the matches, the club's worst goal drought since 1912. His tactical identity applies a progressive, possession-based football while developing young talent. Statistically, Rosenior's time before the move to Stamford Bridge with Chelsea FC was impressive. The potential manager of Chelsea should be equipped to meet the demands of an elite team head-on and navigate through limited control. Moreover, the new coach's leadership style must possess the ability to develop youth at an elite level while prioritizing players with high-paying contracts. Return on investment is the primary motivation for this league to survive, and qualifying for the Champions League, winning tournaments, and loyal fans are conditional factors to improve the state of Chelsea. The urgency the manager must face is distressing, yet for a permanent position with this brand, a composed head coach with effective solutions will create change for the better.

Front Runners

Popular hopefuls considered for the position are seasoned coaches who have the characteristics to take the helm. Xabi Alonso recently left Real Madrid in 2026, previously working with Bayer Leverkusen, winning the club’s first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024. Alonso is known as a high-possession systems coach. Andoni Iraola will leave Bournemouth at the end of the 2025-2026 season with the highest points ever attained in history for the Premier League club. Iraola infuses high-pressure tactics to thwart the opposition. Marco Silva from Fulham is approaching the end of a five-year, highly successful campaign stabilizing the club in the top half of the Premier League. Silva fortifies his midfield positioning when necessary. Oliver Glasner leaves Crystal Palace in June 2026, leading the team to its first major trophy, the 2025 FA Cup, transforming a relegation-threatened team into a stable, tactical unit. Cesc Fabregas, managing at Como, implements a technically elite philosophy, attracting high-profile talent at the Italian club.

Potential Women Successors

Two women successors have the tactical caliber to potentially lead a men's team at the top performing level. Sonia Bompastor, the current head coach of Chelsea Women, was the first woman to win the Champions League as both a player and manager. Bompastor tactical blueprint involves structured possession and “asymmetrical fullbacks” to burden midfields.  This style is similar to what the Chelsea board originally wanted from Rosenior. Camille Abily is the assistant coach for Chelsea Women and a former midfielder. Abily is known for intricate tactical drills and player development, fostering high-pressure squads.
