Why 2026 Is a Defining Season for the New York Giants Amid Rising Expectations

NFL

The New York Giants are walking into 2026 with believable momentum that they can bring the heat this season. That does not mean this team is suddenly a Super Bowl favorite. However, it does mean expectations are starting to change from bad to surprisingly good. For the first time in a few years, there are actual reasons to believe this roster can compete for a playoff spot instead of just surviving the season. Where they have been and where they currently stand have turned a lot of areas around in Big Blue.

A realistic expectation for the Giants this year is for the team's record to be somewhere around 9-8 or 10-7 with a legitimate and possible Wild Card push come the end of the season. The biggest reason is that the defense finally feels like it may have an identity again. Last season, the Giants defense struggled to consistently pressure opponents quarterbacks, stop the run, and close games out late. However, this offseason feels different. There is more speed, more aggression, and more physicality being added to the defensive front. If those additions develop the way the organization hopes, the defensive line could go from being a weakness to one of the team’s biggest strengths.

The Giants do not necessarily need to become the best defense in football overnight. They just need to become disruptive again. A stronger defensive front changes everything. It helps the secondary, creates turnovers, and keeps the offense from constantly playing from behind. If the pass rush becomes consistent, New York suddenly becomes a team nobody enjoys playing against.

On the offensive side, a healthy Cam Skattebo could end up being the biggest turning point of the season. Before his injury last year, he brought energy and balance to New York’s offensive line. The Giants looked more confident when he was involved because he gave them toughness in the run game and helped control the pace of games. Once he went down, the offense lost most of its identity and became too inconsistent for them to move forward with any wins.

That is why Skattebo’s return matters so much. If he comes back healthy and looks like the same player, the Giants may finally have their priorities straightened out offensively. Instead of trying to force everything through risky plays or abandoning the run early, they can play more balanced football. That takes pressure off the quarterback, keeps the defense fresh, and opens up opportunities for the passing game.

Another reason for optimism is that the culture around this team feels different. The Giants finally look like they are building with purpose instead of patching holes every offseason, which has been a focus for the last few years. There is more youth, more competition, and more players who actually fit what the coaching staff wants to do. That does not guarantee success immediately, but it creates stability, which the franchise has lacked for years.

The schedule will still be tough for them to handle, even with their primetime push, especially in the NFC. Young teams usually lose games they should win before they fully figure things out. However, if the defense takes the step forward many expect and Skattebo returns to form, the Giants have enough talent to stay in the playoff conversation all season long. They have fallen out of it on multiple occasions in the last several years, with only one visit to the playoffs in all that time. This season will definitely be one for the books.

The realistic expectation should not be “Super Bowl or bust.” The realistic expectation is meaningful football in December again, with a playoff appearance. They also have a foundation that finally feels sustainable. For Giants fans, that alone would be a major step forward. There is no going back this season.
