Why 2026 Will Make or Break the Packers Wide Receiving Room
The Green Bay Packers are well into OTAs this offseason, where they hope for a better year after being eliminated in the Wild Card Round last season. Despite making the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, Green Bay hasn’t made it past the Divisional Round and has lacked being a powerhouse in the NFC North. The team has undergone many changes in the last five years, including switching from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love. Rodgers became undeniably one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history during his time with the Packers, but with the help of wide receiver Davante Adams, he remained consistent. Love has had a great career so far as a starter, but has possibly been held back from his full potential without having a stable top wide receiver option at his disposal.
The 27-year-old QB has thrown for 10,929 passing yards, 80 touchdowns, and only 28 interceptions in his three seasons as a starter. In that span, Green Bay has not had a receiver reach over 900 receiving yards. Last season, wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who is now with the New England Patriots, led the team with 724 yards and six touchdowns. While productive, in comparison to other top targets around the league, Love has gotten the short end of the stick. There has not been a Packers receiver to reach over 1,000 receiving yards since Adams left town in 2021. Wide receiver Jayden Reed was the top target for Love’s first two seasons as a starter, but he could never fully become the undeniable best wide receiver for his team. Looking forward to next season, the Packers may have to shake things up if the results don’t change, but this may have given the needed incentive to push the current players in the room.
Wide receiver Christian Watson signed a four-year, $110.5 million extension with a $31 million signing bonus. Despite missing the first six games in 2025, the 27-year-old receiver was able to generate 611 yards and six touchdowns. His explosive speed and ability to make big plays have earned him an extension, which may help push the other receivers on the team to step up. Watson’s biggest challenge will be to remain healthy, as injury has set him back a few times since tearing his ACL in 2024. He has the biggest potential to become the next Adams in Green Bay, and finally give Love the weapon he’s been sorely needing. While the Packers are ready for a huge jump from their receivers next season, it may be make-or-break time before they’ll need to reset the position room.
