Why a 27-Year-Old Former Mammoth Makes the Vincent Trocheck Trade Worth it for the 26-27 NY Rangers
The New York Rangers have had to say some tough goodbyes once free agency hit. From saying farewell to the youngster Brett Berard, waving goodbye to the big man Adam Edström, and shedding a tear as New York says adieu to their faceoff king. Following July 1st, the Blueshirts traded Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth, a surprise to quite a few fans, as most expected him to remain in the Eastern Conference. A sad goodbye to one of the Rangers' best players when it came to showing up when it mattered. Many may have expected a bit more for the 33-year-old center, but the return they got may still make this very worth it.
No doubt Trocheck will be very missed, producing quite efficiently for the Rangers, especially in the postseason, so a pretty hefty return was expected. In exchange for the Rangers center, the Blueshirts received a 2027 third-round pick, prospect Cole Beaudoin, and Utah defenseman Sean Durzi. While most expected a future first-round pick in exchange, they certainly received the next best thing in Beaudoin, picked 24th overall in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Durzi looks to be the one that makes this trade most certainly worth it, especially for a Rangers team that has completely changed up its defense. Looking to make their second and third defensive pairs frightening at last, the 27-year-old defenseman may be the perfect fit.
Going into the offseason, GM Chris Drury made it clear they’re looking for defensemen with chemistry. This may play a factor in Durzi most likely pairing with the former Vancouver defenseman Marcus Pettersson. That gives the Blueshirts a second pairing to certainly keep an eye on. With another pairing besides Adam Fox and Vladislav Gavrikov, the defense may just have hope yet. This leaves the final pair of Braden Schneider and most likely Matthew Robinson, due to their 2026 fifth overall pick not being ready for the NHL just yet, where fans can only hope Schneider can bounce back after a 25-26 season one can’t brag about. This trade has given the Rangers much to look forward to defensively, though plenty have seen this before; let’s see if the chemistry is there on opening night. The defense may be on the rise, but what can we expect from the former Mammoth?
Beginning his career with the Los Angeles Kings, Durzi finished off his rookie campaign with three goals and 24 assists in 64 games. After two seasons, the Canadian defenseman joined the Arizona Coyotes, now known as the Utah Mammoth, in the 23-24 season, scoring nine goals and 32 assists in 76 games. Two seasons later, he ended his 25-26 campaign with five goals and 22 assists in 60 games. These stats show a young defenseman who can most certainly contribute on the blue line. A man who makes plays, has experience as a top-four defenseman, and a wicked wrist shot gives him the shot of being one of the greats in the Big Apple. All fans can hope for is that the chemistry with Pettersson is there from the start; with a competent top-four, this team may surprise a few. The road back to contending status has begun, and with an upgraded defense like this, the Blueshirts are on the right track; let’s see what this six-foot defenseman is made of.
