Why a Former All-Pro Corner Makes Sense for the Dolphins

NFL

By now, most of the NFL has heard two major breaking stories. Miami Dolphins star cornerback Jalen Ramsey wants to play elsewhere, and Green Bay Packers star CB Jaire Alexander is on the open market, available for anyone to snatch up. With Alexander now available, the Dolphins could look to replace their 30-year-old corner with a 28-year-old. Would it make sense for Miami to throw money at a potential short-term deal?

The Jalen Ramsey drama continues. He is not planning to attend the mandatory minicamp this week, and that likely won’t change until he’s in a different uniform. This situation is quite comparable to the one Alexander faced with the Packers. Green Bay attempted to work out a trade, but it seemed no team was willing to meet their asking price—especially given his contract. The worst-case scenario for the Dolphins would be having to release Ramsey. If that happens, Miami would incur a dead cap hit of approximately $6.7 million in 2025, with the remaining $18.4 million deferred to 2026.

Ramsey has been known for posting cryptic messages throughout his career. When trade rumors began circulating after general manager Chris Grier confirmed in a press conference that both sides were mutually parting ways, Ramsey took to social media. On his Instagram story, he posted a photo of rotten oranges with a caption at the top reading, “Surround yourself with who matters.” At the bottom, it read, “If you surround yourself with people who are okay with mediocrity, you too will start to be okay with it… Surround yourself with people who desire GREATNESS.” Ramsey was also one of the loudest voices when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was fired after just one season. So, it looks like once again, Ramsey has found himself in controversy in Miami.

Alexander’s situation with Green Bay tells a different story. Both sides tried hard to restructure his four-year, $84 million contract to keep him with the Packers, but ultimately couldn’t see eye to eye. Unlike Ramsey, Alexander expressed interest in staying, but he was released early Monday morning. While Alexander has been one of the NFL’s top corners in recent years, he has appeared in just 34 games over the last four seasons due to recurring injuries.

Some may argue that the Dolphins don’t need another aging veteran with an injury history. However, with how depleted their secondary is, especially with the potential loss of Ramsey, why not take a flyer on one of the NFL’s best? Miami has already shown interest in Rasul Douglas and Asante Samuel Jr. since the conclusion of the NFL Draft, but with Alexander unexpectedly on the market, things could get interesting. The Dolphins could offer him a one or two-year deal depending on his asking price. Ideally, signing Alexander would be one of the final moves Miami makes this offseason, but it could also be one of the most impactful.
