Why a Former Denver Nugget Is Bringing Unwanted Attention to the Brooklyn Nets
In the last couple of months, since Michael Porter Jr. was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He has stirred up unwanted attention for the team, the same player who scored 21 points in Game Three against the Timberwolves in the NBA Playoffs. It has become a viral meme clip every other week due to the comments he makes. Porter Jr. was one of the reasons why the Nuggets improved their lead in the playoffs. Much of the controversy and unwanted attention is from media appearances and also podcast appearances.
One of the things he said that first led to controversy during the summer was his comments about splitting rent with his now ex-girlfriend despite having millions of dollars. It led to many people calling him misogynistic and led to a debate about relationships in the public. Another instance in the same conversation was when he showed her videos of Andrew Tate to gauge her reaction. He would continue to be interested as long as they were interested in Andrew Tate. This was one of the beginning moments where Porter Jr. found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons. His brother's legal issues as well, and just saying straight out that his brother has a gambling problem. This made people angry at him for revealing his family issues without regard for their privacy. Now he's making headlines again for lighter reasons, or rather, dumb ones. Saying he spends $200-250 on Uber daily. Which caused more shock than controversy, especially now that I live in New York City.
All of these comments, made since the Nets acquired him, have prompted Nets general manager Sean Marks to tell Porter Jr. to dial it back, as he might get away with it in smaller markets but not in New York City. It bears a strong resemblance to Kyrie Irving's time in New York. Many fans want to erase that from Nets history. The best thing Porter Jr. can do is focus on the game. He wants to be more outspoken and win over fans in the city that way. Yet what will give him more admiration is the way he plays the game. Porter Jr. was sometimes nonexistent. His last few games in the playoffs before elimination were mediocre at best. It was a good thing the general manager put his foot down because not all controversy is necessary. Many fans want him to focus more on the game and winning a title. It will be interesting to see if he uses his new home to finally be the change many Nets fans have been hoping for.
