Why a Giants 27-Year-Old Wide Receiver Could Be on the Verge of a Breakout Season in 2026
The New York Football Giants played their second preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. Plenty of new faces have joined their roster. However, in that matchup, one of their new faces became one of the most underrated players on the roster. Calvin Austin III pulled through and showed New York he can bring the heat when needed. There may be a possibility that he might be a breakout player on New York’s offensive line this season.
Austin joined Big Blue earlier this offseason. He spent his first three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While there, the former Steelers receiver showed neither flash nor consistency. When New York’s offseason addition did, the Steelers liked what they saw, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on in the end. New York liked what they saw from him and made the decision to bring him in to see how he would do with the Giants' offensive crew.
Austin’s best season came in 2024. He hauled in 36 receptions for 548 yards. The speedy wide receiver also scored three touchdowns. The young receiver averaged 15.2 yards per reception. The Giants' vertical threat showed big-play ability, and he has the potential to become a dangerous weapon for New York. The Giants’ serious threat was able to prove that in Week Two of the 2026 preseason to show his current team what he could really accomplish.
The fourth-year wideout is only five-foot-nine and 162 pounds, making him on the lighter side of playing with this team. The Giants' new weapon will never overpower defensive backs with his size; however, his biggest weapon is his speed. The former Memphis track athlete can stretch many defenses vertically. Austin also knows how to create separation and turn a short pass into a much larger gain. Something that John Harbaugh really liked about him when the Giants signed him on. He also fits perfectly with the skill set that quarterback Jaxson Dart is looking for.
During this past season's training camp, Austin has started building chemistry with the Giants quarterback. Dart and the new Giants weapon have connected on multiple occasions. These two have also hooked up on deep passes during practices. Austin's ability to threaten defenses on multiple levels could give this young quarterback another weapon besides Malik Nabers. If Nabers struggles to play this season, he may be the team's backup plan.
Heading into 2026, Austin doesn't need to be number one; the team needs him to provide something different. If Nabers draws attention from defensive linemen, Austin could step in and find himself matched up against nickel corners and safeties more often. His speed is what makes many of those matchups different. New York can definitely benefit from having him on their roster.
Austin also brings value on special teams, which can make a difference for New York. Last season, they got very far down the field on punt returns. Having him will allow them to get much further. In the past, he has returned 72 punts for 639 yards during his career so far, including a 73-yard touchdown. Having this versatility gives the Giants another reason to get the ball into his hands.
The former Steelers receiver can put in the work and be flashy when needed. Austin has a fresh start in New York with an offensive line looking for playmakers. The speedy wideout can definitely be one. The Giants are looking to build around Dart, and Austin is a player he can turn to. This could be the season where the Giants' offense breaks out, especially now that they have this wide receiver on their team.
