Why Brian Moorman Deserves to Be on the Bills Wall of Fame

NFL

The Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame was created in 1980 to celebrate former players, coaches, and administrators who played essential roles in the team’s history. 31 inductees have been enshrined in the Wall of Fame since its inception. However, no one has been inducted since 1962 AFL MVP Cookie Gilchrist received the honor in 2017. With a new stadium being prepped for the 2026 season, why not add more Bills legends' names to the Wall of Fame? This edition will show why Brian Moorman deserves to be on the Wall of Fame.

The drought years were tough on many Bills players, including many who have already been mentioned in this series. In looking back at those years, not many more things exemplified the team more than bad offensive play. That is exactly why Moorman fits the mold to be selected for the Wall of Fame. He became a household name simply due to an excruciatingly bad era of quarterback play for the team playing in what was then known as Ralph Wilson Stadium. After going undrafted in 1999 from Division II Pittsburg State, Moorman didn’t give up on his dream of becoming a professional football player. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad, where he remained for two seasons until signing with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe. After a long journey to get onto a starting NFL roster, he finally did it in 2001 when Buffalo signed him to a two-year contract worth $509,000.

The Wichita, Kansas, native took the job as punter and never gave it back. He played in Buffalo for 13 seasons, earning back-to-back First-Team All-Pro selections in 2005 and ‘06. He punted the ball 923 times for 40,370 yards, averaging 43.7 yards per punt in his 190 games played for the Bills. The two-time Division II All-American ranks fifth all-time in games played in the history of the franchise, as well as being the all-time leader in punts, punting yards, and longest punt in team history at 84 yards. All of these accolades, combined with the fact that he was selected to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and Buffalo Bills 50th Anniversary Team, are great reasons to put his name on the Wall of Fame.
