Why It’s a Must for the Yankees Manager to Bring All the Smoke in 2027

MLB

A week after the New York Yankees’ 2026 season ended with the Tampa Bay Rays sweeping the ALDS, it was reported that Yankees manager Aaron Boone will be returning to the team to manage the Bronx Bombers for a 10th season. As of this moment, Boone’s contract is set to run through 2027, as he signed a two-year extension back in February 2025. Yet, many are doubtful he is the guy to take the Yankees to the promised land. That’s why it’s a must for the Yankees manager to bring all the smoke during the 2027 season.

Although he hasn’t led the Yankees to a 28th World Series yet, Boone’s track record is extremely strong. The 2003 MLB all-star has a .583 winning percentage, which is tied for 17th in Major League history. He’s helped New York reach the postseason in eight of his nine seasons and has not finished worse than two games over .500, which keeps the Yankees’ MLB-record streak of 34 consecutive winning seasons alive. Even with all the injuries the Bronx Bombers sustained during the 2026 season, especially to big pieces on the team such as Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Carlos Rodón, New York was still able to win 93 games and make a postseason push.

The Yankees’ 17-season drought is the second longest in franchise history. New York has gone 13 straight playoff appearances without a World Series Championship, which is tied for the fourth-longest streak in MLB Postseason history. Under Boone, the Yankees made it to the 2024 World Series, eventually losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2019 and 2022 saw the Bronx Bombers make it to the ALCS, only to be defeated by the Houston Astros. The past two seasons have seen AL East Division rivals such as the Rays and Toronto Blue Jays beat them in postseason action. This is why it’s a must for the Yankees manager to come out swinging and bring all the smoke.

With his job potentially on the line during the 2027 season or after next season, Boone must do everything in his power to keep his clubhouse in check and produce the best results possible. He can not be blamed for all the injuries of last season, yet the 2003 all-star needs to ensure that if the Yankees are in a “next man up situation,” the player can do the job and give New York a rally or run that can spark the offense for the next stretch of games. 2026 was a hard-hitting lesson for the Yankees, and they must prove they can come back from all the adversity. That starts with Boone, leading this ball club and bringing confidence to every opponent they face.

After Game Three of the ALDS, Boone said, "You go through a lot as a group, and then it's just a sudden end. It's the worst fricking feeling in the world. You know, again, offering that perspective with all due respect, and I have that perspective of we are playing a game. I understand that, but it doesn't lessen the pain of the ending, you know, and hopefully that's something that again continues to fuel guys that are going through this for the first time and then those of us that have been through it a lot."

Judge said after Game Three of the ALDS, "He's our manager. He's running the ship, especially in a season like this. I'm banged up, missing 100 games. You miss Stanton, Cole, Rodón, miss a lot of guys. Trent Grisham for a little bit. Cody Bellinger, who was an MVP for us. For him to manage it the way he did, put us in the best position in the playoffs, and give us an opportunity to win a World Series, he's definitely had our back, and he's our guy."

The Yankees clubhouse has trust in Boone. They can make a 28th World Series a reality in 2027. However, this will most likely be Boone’s final shot at achieving this feat. He must bring all the smoke and give New York the best possible chance to win every single game.
