Why the Mets are Already a Wild Card
The 2025 Mets baseball season has been nothing short of wild. After ups and downs – losing streaks that transitioned into sweeping victories, and plenty of Gatorade dumped on Pete Alonso – the Mets are competing for the Wild Card spot and the chance to be in the playoffs. It all comes down to their final series against the Miami Marlins and the performance of the Cincinnati Reds in their playoff chase against the Brewers. It is safe to say that the unpredictable New York Mets are a wild card for the 2025 season. Will that be enough to get them to the playoffs?
As of Sept. 27th, the Cincinnati Reds are holding the playoff spot – having beaten the Brewers 3-1 in the first game of their final series. The Mets are not off to the solid start they’d hoped to be in. The team is one game behind the Reds after blowing their lead in the fifth inning against the Miami Marlins, with a final score of 6-2. As in typical fashion for Mets fans, viewers are waiting for their favorite team to pull out all the stops from their final bag of tricks. Will a Mets miracle be enough to bring them back into the game?
If the Mets win tonight's game against the Marlins, they could be back in the running for that postseason Wild Card. It ultimately depends on the performance of the Reds tonight – whether or not they continue their hot streak, or they lose the game. It’s a classic prison dilemma: if both the Reds and the Mets win, then nothing will change. The Reds will continue to hold the postseason Wild Card. Well, if the Mets win and the Reds lose, the Mets are back in it for a potential overhaul.
The performance of the Mets tonight against the Marlins has to be a victory if they have a chance at the Wild Card. Otherwise, fans are looking at an early departure for their favorite team and will have to watch from the sidelines as the Reds take the spot. Still, there’s so much potential for the Mets to come back. Why? Well, they’ve done it before. Last season, the 2024 Mets beat the Phillies to earn a Wild Card spot in a final series that determined it all.
The Mets have always been the Wild Card. They’re a team full of talented guys who play at their best when they give it their all and keep the smiles rolling. Nobody knows what the results of tonight's game against the Marlins will yield, but fans know they’ll see a team with the potential to bring it all home. If only they let themselves experience the ups and downs with hope.
