Why the Win at the Miami Open Finals Shakes Up Tennis in 2026
This current era of tennis is often considered a two-person game. The first and second-ranked players for the past few years have consistently been Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. This dynamic was put under some stress earlier this year when Sinner lost in the Semifinals of the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic. This loss, combined with Alcaraz completing a career slam with a win at the Australian Open, presented a case that this current era was only a one-person game. Yet, Sinner was able to come back swinging in March at both the Miami Open and the Indian Wells Open. Winning both tournaments helped him achieve the status of having the third-best career winning percentage at the Masters 1000 Tournaments, above Alcaraz. His comeback is more impressive when considering his showings at these tournaments against other top players like Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.
Despite this, Sinner doesn’t have a clear path to victory at any upcoming Masters 1000 or Grand Slam if he plays against Alcaraz. The two haven't played against one another since 2025, and Alcaraz has beaten Sinner almost twice as many times as he’s lost to him. Furthermore, the next few tournaments of the season will take place on clay courts, where Alcaraz has beaten Sinner repeatedly, only losing to Sinner once back in 2022. Alcaraz’s specialty is clay, whereas Sinner’s is hard court. This is likely part of why he did so well in the Miami Open and Indian Wells Open, which are both played on hard courts. With the Rolex Monte-Carlo coming soon on the horizon, a clay court tournament, time will only tell if Sinner has just gotten back into his hard court groove or if he’s really changed his way of playing the game so he has a shot of winning Roland Garros in a few months.
This recent Sinner dominance does not mean fans should count out Alcaraz. He is still ranked first in the world and currently holds the title for the youngest player to complete a career slam. These next few tournaments are taking place where Alcaraz feels at home, on the clay. His early exit from Miami also allowed him to practice his clay court play style in the last week. Tennis is an individual sport, and top players often go through times when they’re counted out. Viewers counted out Sinner after his loss at the Australian Open, and he’s won the past two Masters 1000 Tournaments. Earlier in the decade, fans considered it impossible for Rafael Nadal to win another Grand Slam after his many injuries, but he proved them all wrong. Furthermore, Djokovic’s entire career has come from him proving the fans wrong: from competing with and beating Roger Federer and Nadal to making it to the Finals of a Grand Slam earlier this year at the age of 38. The biggest and best moments in tennis happen when a player is forced to prove themselves, and it looks like Alcaraz will have to show the world why he’s the best player in the world.
