Why Vancouver Should Re-Sign This Rising Forward

NHL

Several Vancouver Canucks are set to hit free agency this summer and it’s unsure who we will see return to the team and who will be sent off to another. While I cannot predict the future of the Canucks, I can say that I think Vancouver would strongly benefit from at least extending the contract of one of their free agents: Pius Suter. During the 2024-2025 season, Suter showed great talent and led the team to several wins despite a less-than-successful season for Vancouver. Though he has only played with the Canucks for two seasons and five in his NHL career, Suter has proved himself to be a beneficial addition to any team.

The 2024-2025 season turned out to be Suter’s best yet. He played a total of 81 games with 46 points. He had 25 goals and 21 assists, landing him the fifth-most points for the season. Suter played a pivotal role in the Canucks overtime win against the Dallas Stars, scoring two points to help Vancouver tie the game with a minute remaining in the third period despite a three point deficit. Suter is an undeniable talent who only continues to get better and prove his worth to the team.

However, not everyone is on board with re-signing Suter. While he had a great season, it was noticeably better than any of his previous seasons, leading some people to think it was a fluke. Without any real evidence that he will continue to pull these kinds of numbers in upcoming seasons, it can be hard to rationalize re-signing him, especially when it will be a decently expensive move for Vancouver. However, the Canucks need every boost they can get. Having a player who knows the coaching staff and already has bonds with the other players could be beneficial to the team as they try to build up their power.

Though re-signing Suter would be expensive for the team, it would be a worthy investment. Suter is a very versatile player who can play both center and wing positions. The Canucks are in desperate need of more power in their centers, so keeping Suter around could be of great benefit for the team. Following a disappointing season, the franchise needs to do everything they can to strengthen the team again, and I think extending Pius Suter would give the Canucks a shot at a much better outcome than the 2024-2025 season going into the upcoming season.
