Will a 23-Year-Old Quarterback Answer the 2026 Giants Struggles?
The New York Giants season hasn't gone the way they'd like so far. Injuries have plagued them badly, and they have only been three games into the season. The biggest injury of all is to star signal caller Jaxson Dart, who has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury. This big-time injury has left the G-men with only one quarterback on the roster: Jameis Winston. Winston has held the starting duty for two weeks now, but the Giants have struggled with him at the helm; this is when New York knew they had to make a move. That move was the acquisition of 23-year-old JJ McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings. McCarthy is the former tenth-overall pick who has needed a fresh start since his job in Minnesota was taken by veteran Kyler Murray.
While the former Michigan Wolverine had his fair share of struggles as a Viking, he is still young and has much potential. Head Coach John Harbaugh has told the media that Winston will remain the starter; the 23-year-old is still learning the playbook, which he has had only days to memorize. This, though, could change. If Winston continues his struggles in the passing game, the Giants will most likely hand the job to the former Viking sooner rather than later. The Giants will then see whether his potential translates into production. The answer to whether this move will save the Giants' season remains unknown, but what is known is that the G-men have added a player Giants fans should be happy about. New York, on paper, seems like they are having a solid start to the year. The Giants are 2-1, but their season hasn't been going as well as the record shows. Last week, New York barely beat arguably the worst team in the NFL, the Tennessee Titans, with star pass rusher Brian Burns also going down with a season-ending injury. With all this bad going for New York, they are hoping this trade for another signal caller can help keep their season afloat. The Giants didn't acquire a proven quarterback in their trade for McCarthy, but they did acquire another chance in a season that looked like it was already over. Whether this chance becomes temporary or not, it becomes another shot for the young quarterback, one that could define the G-Men's entire season.
