Will the Giants Star Receiver’s 2026 Comeback Be a Blockbuster Return or a Reality Check?

NFL

The New York Giants go into this upcoming season with plenty of question marks about the roster. The biggest question looming in fans' minds is whether Malik Nabers will get back to where he left off or if his return will be met with regression. The former first-round pick has been putting in work this past year to come back from a torn ACL. Nabers suffered this season-ending injury in Week Four of last season. The last time the 23-year-old was healthy, he showed the Giants why they took him in the first round. In just four games last season, the former LSU WR pulled in 18 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Recovering from an injury like this hasn't been easy for the third-year receiver.

This offseason, Nabers underwent two separate surgeries after his knee injury. The first one was the initial surgery to fix his knee, and the second was to remove extra scar tissue from his knee. This injury has been much more than a normal ACL recovery, which makes the 23-year-old a question mark in many fans' minds. During training camp, the former LSU receiver was seen running routes and started participating in drills with the other receivers while wearing a red non-contact jersey. He made plenty of spectacular catches during practices, but the question is not whether he can still catch. The question is whether his knee can handle a full-speed, full-contact NFL game.

Nabers is expected to immediately make an impact come Week One against the Dallas Cowboys if he is deemed healthy. Young signal caller Jaxson Dart is going into his second season as an NFL quarterback and is looking to make a big jump in performance. The 23-year-old receiver has the skills to help him do just that. Route running and making spectacular plays is exactly what he is known for and is what New York lacked most of last season. A player like this forces opposing teams to put all their focus on him, making opportunities for other receivers such as Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney, and Odell Beckham Jr. The Giants also just made a move showing how much they trust Nabers, as they moved on from veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton earlier in the week. It seems that the Giants' facility expects the 23-year-old to be healthy.

New York fans have so many reasons to be pumped about this season, but they also have to be realistic. Expecting Nabers to return to his form from before his injury right away may not happen. While the Giants expect him to return to the field in Week One, it doesn't change the fact that an ACL tear can take lots of time to fully heal. The 23-year-old is a player who relies on his natural athleticism, like speed, route running, and agility. While he can get back to his old form, the former LSU receiver may be limited in action in the first couple of weeks. One thing doesn't change, though: the Giants still should expect the former first-round pick to get back to the star receiver he was in midseason. The question will remain: can Nabers make a comeback for the ages, or will his return to the field be a harsh reality check for New York Giants fans around the world?
