Will This Former Giants Starting Quarterback Remain on the Team?
The Cinderella story of Tommy DeVito has been pretty quiet so far during this offseason. The team hasn’t made any noise about him or suggested what his status is going to be. However, at the moment, he remains a New York Giant. No one knows how much longer, but DeVito keeps sinking further and further down in the quarterback room.
DeVito currently stands as the fourth quarterback on the Giants’ depth chart. Since earlier this season when they signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and drafted rookie Jaxson Dart, it’s been almost as if he’s been disappearing into oblivion. Last season, he was inserted as the starting quarterback after the release of former Giant quarterback Daniel Jones. In total, this backup quarterback had eight starts. DeVito spent the end of last season alternating starting between himself and the backup quarterback at the time, Drew Lock. The Giants didn’t have a choice because every other of their other quarterbacks was injured or, in DeVito's case, he could simply not earn head coach Brian Daboll's trust as the starting quarterback altogether.
The franchise decided to re-sign him with the exclusive franchise tag after last season, after he did a few good things for the team in the past few years. In 2023, the Giants had some good wins with him, all while Jones was out due to an ACL tear. Everyone was thrilled with how well he had done, and it seemed that the Giants had been brought back from the dead for a while. He was never a terrible quarterback, but he has not been a living legend like Aaron Rodgers or former Giants quarterback Eli Manning. In the last two seasons, he has appeared in 12 games, had 145 completions on 222 attempts, 1,358 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. All decent areas for him, but things really fell off after last year, and now there has been nothing but silence from the bottom of the quarterback room.
At the moment, DeVito has been showing up to all the team's OTAs and the early off-season camps to keep his spot on the team. This backup quarterback has been seen communicating with Dart at certain points, reinforcing how he has been developing in the quarterback room. DeVito has been taking on nearly all the drills that are presented to quarterbacks. At one of the most recent practices, he was seen connecting on a touchdown to wide receiver Dalen Cambre.
If DeVito wants to continue with the Giants for the season, he needs to show them that he still has it. The other option is that the Giants will trade away Winston, and that will automatically put him back in as the team’s third-string quarterback. For now, during the offseason, he is still a Giant, but when it comes to the official roster, things may be in question with how many are standing in the quarterback room. However, if Winston continues to be on the team, that may leave the New Jersey native down at the bottom of most lists, and he may most likely find himself on a new team at the beginning of the new season.
