WrestleMania Matches We’ll Most Likely Never See

WWE

For the most part, WWE always gives the fans those potential dream matches at WrestleMania, even if it’s a year or two later than we’d had hoped. However, sometimes these dream matches just don’t work out for whatever particular reason. It could be the age, injuries, or even the timing of a superstar’s availability that rattles this match into the parallel of nonexistence. Over the past few years, there have been multiple matches on the verge of potentially happening that never did or dream matches that fans still cling to in hopes of making them a reality. It’s time to dive into these potential WrestleMania matches and look at if there’s a slim chance of these ever taking place.

Roman Reigns vs. The Rock

Ever since the conclusion of WrestleMania XL, the WWE Universe was foaming at the mouth to see the matchup of the ages take center stage between Roman Reigns and The Rock. Both are cousins from ‘The Bloodline’, with multiple championships to their name, and a Hall of Fame resume. Over the last couple of years, Reigns has made fewer appearances as a WWE superstar as he’s shifted into the world of Hollywood, recently filming for the new Street Fighter movie, set to hit theatres in October 2026. Rock has been in the movie business for well over two decades, yet has dedicated time to come back to WWE, like what he did in 2012 and 2013, as well as his WrestleMania XL storyline involving Reigns and Cody Rhodes. In 2025, Rock appeared at the Elimination Chamber premium live event, where he tried to convince Rhodes to sell his soul. A few moments later, one of the most infamous moments happened when John Cena turned heel. Since that viral moment, Rock has not had any significance within WWE. With Reigns taking on Seth Rollins and CM Punk at WrestleMania XLI, it was understood that The Rock’s hectic schedule could not let him appear at the show. Yet, the hopes of a match between Reigns and The Rock are distantly fading into the shadows. It could be a possibility at WrestleMania XLII; however, there are no indications that it’s a planned match, as The Rock has not been featured in any of the promotional advertisements about WrestleMania XLII. It seems like the hype of a match between the two has died off significantly and will stay that way until it becomes a reality.

Gunther vs. Brock Lesnar

Don’t get me wrong, a match between Gunther and Brock Lesnar will certainly be happening one way or another in 2026, especially a good chance at SummerSlam 2026, which is taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city where Lesnar became one of the best amateur wrestlers of our generation. I personally don’t think we’ll see this at WrestleMania, however. Unless we get a string of matches between the two from WrestleMania to SummerSlam, yet, that would be too long a feud to dish out. It also just makes sense to have Gunther eventually feud with Lesnar to set up a potential final match in Minneapolis. Having both these guys feud will keep the WWE Universe on their toes, yet there’s so much both Gunther and Lesnar could do before being face-to-face, especially to stock up the WrestleMania card as much as they possibly can. It’s probable we'll see this match in 2026, at WrestleMania; however, it’s a slim chance.

AJ Lee vs. Paige

Both AJ Lee and Paige have had two unique careers within WWE. Lee, a two-time Divas Champion, has only appeared in two WrestleManias, and one of those she didn’t even compete as a wrestler. Paige has only had one WrestleMania match in her career; that match was a tag match with Paige teaming with Lee against Brie Bella and Nikki Bella. One reason why this match is highly unlikely is that Paige is not even signed to WWE at the moment. There have been rumors of her return for months now, yet nothing has been confirmed whether these are true or just speculations. While Lee is back with WWE, it’s not on a full-time contract. She’ll most likely be in feuds with big stars or up-and-coming stars still trying to carve out a name for themselves on the main roster. At WrestleMania XLII, it’s presumed we’ll see the former two-time Divas Champion take on Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship. The feud between Lee and Lynch started after SummerSlam, right around the time WWE was getting ready for their first ESPN premium live event, WrestlePalooza. With the Women’s WarGame match featuring both women as their team’s respective captains, it only makes sense to have this feud end at WrestleMania. Both Lee and Paige are two women who helped bring forward the women’s revolution within wrestling, and seeing them square off one-on-one would be something all of the WWE Universe could get invested in.
