WWE Might Bring Back a Beloved 2010s Tag Team in 2026 Amid Division’s Woes
WWE’s tag team division is in shambles. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins of The Street Profits are currently in an angle where a breakup is likely to play out; they just returned onscreen a few weeks ago. Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin of the Motor City Machine Guns were released simultaneously with former MFT members JC Mateo and Tonga Loa earlier this year. Mateo and Loa didn’t win the tag team titles, but they were active while the other MFT members won the belts. The Guns are former WWE Tag Team Champions, but once their reign ended, their creative direction got stale until it was too late. Towards the end of their run, there was a potential breakup angle between the long-time tag team; it never finished out.
The New Day Releases Shocked the Wrestling World
The most shocking releases were those of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. Kingston had been a staple in the upper midcard for nearly 20 years and gained the rare accolade of Grand Slam Champion. Woods was the brains behind the creation of The New Day, pitching the idea to former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. The former tag team champion told the then-chairman that WWE could fire him if the team didn’t work out. The rest is history. The stable, alongside Big E, obtained the WWE Tag Team Championships 13 times, which is the current record for most WWE tag team title reigns. Many believed that every New Day member was going to stay with WWE until they all decided to retire. They had given everything they could to the company, but apparently, TKO wanted them to take a pay cut. New Day's leaving WWE was the ultimate sign that the company did not care for the division, leaving the long-tenured talent bitter with TKO and WWE.
WWE Has Repaired Broken Relationships Before
Time heals all wounds, apparently. Just look at CM Punk’s 2023 Survivor Series return in his hometown; it’s arguably the biggest pop of the 2020s. WWE was cautious with how Punk would act backstage, but he was one of the few talents many believed would never come back to WWE after the way he was treated towards the end of his previous run and fired in 2014. The same could be said for Enzo Amore. The ‘Certified G’ snuck into the WWE crowd at the 2018 Survivor Series while ongoing criminal allegations were pending against him. He was kicked out of the venue and was seemingly blacklisted from the company after the incident. That’s why it was shocking to hear multiple wrestling outlets report that Amore was seen at WWE’s Performance last weekend.
Why Enzo and Cass Still Matter
The ‘Certified G’ was one-half of a beloved 2010s tag team alongside Big Cass. They never won tag team gold during their main roster run from 2016 to 2017, but they were arguably the most over tag team with the WWE universe at the time due to Amore’s charisma, microphone skills, and Cass calling everyone on the WWE roster ‘sawft’. One Monday Night Raw saw the duo’s microphone fail mid-promo, but the crowd helped the team by saying their popular catchphrases with them. With Cass’s AEW contract rumored to expire between the end of the month and June, an Amore-Cass reunion in WWE is possible.
WWE May Be Too Late on a Reunion
What’s confusing is why the company would make a move on the duo now. Cass’ personal demons led to his release in 2018, but he sought help shortly after his release. He signed with AEW in 2022 after getting clean and even had a world tag team title run with Ricky Saints when both members were part of The Firm. Amore and Cass could’ve feuded against teams like the New Day, the Bloodline, the Motor City Machine Guns, the Wyatt Sicks, and even the Judgement Day if they were signed in 2022. WWE may have needed more time to mend their relationship with the ‘Certified G’, but they could’ve easily signed Cass right before their boom period. The duo would be a great addition to WWE’s main roster. A feud against a heel New Day would’ve been a great way to introduce the duo to new WWE fans and to reward long-time fans who watched the duo explode in popularity. Who knows how the beloved duo could return to WWE?
