Yankees Open Eyes on 2026 Opening Day with Shutout Win Over the Giants
The 2026 MLB season is finally upon us! At Oracle Park, the San Francisco Giants hosted the New York Yankees for 2026 Opening Day. While Logan Webb looked to dominate the mound in this matchup for the Giants, that simply wasn’t the case as New York came ready to play, as the Yankees piled in five runs in the second, two runs in the fifth inning, and starter Max Fried and the bullpen dominated for a 7-0 win. Throughout this Opening Day matchup, it seemed like everyone in the Bronx Bombers lineup got into a groove except three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge. Even without Judge being a contributor, the Yankees' win opened eyes, as not only were they on the biggest streaming platform in the world, but they also showed their hunger for a World Series Championship and their readiness to get the season underway. The second game of this three-game series begins on Friday at 4:35 p.m. EST, with the probable pitchers being Will Warren for New York and Tyler Mahle for San Francisco.
Every Yankee Got on Base Except Their Captain
During the 7-0 win, Yankees captain and three-time AL MVP Judge did not record a hit in five at-bats. He struck out four times and grounded out. The sun was certainly a factor in the beginning of the game. When being interviewed in the middle of the game, the Netflix broadcasting crew talked to New York’s second baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr., about the way he reacted to a foul ball and how he moved his feet so quickly. Chisholm Jr. replied that he couldn’t even see the ball on that particular play, so the strong sunny rays in San Francisco played a huge part in the first few innings of this game. However, for last year’s MVP to not record a hit, receive a golden sombrero for four strikeouts, and be the only Yankees to not get on base during the win, that’s not a heartbreaking concern, but still should be an issue to keep an eye on, especially if this continues to happen. While there are still 161 games left to be played, the bad performance doesn’t impact Judge as much, but raises questions about the others in the lineup, whether they can perform when their captain isn’t.
Can the Giants Three-Time All-Star Second Baseman Continue His Hit Streak?
Three-time all-star second baseman Luis Arráez finished the 2025 season with the San Diego Padres with a 15-game hitting streak. That streak carried on into the 2026 season, as in the 7-0 loss, he went one for three to extend it to a 16-game streak. Arráez was one of three Giants to record a hit in the loss, with the others being designated hitter Rafael Devers and left fielder Heliot Ramos. As a consistent hitter and a threat to get on base over the past few seasons, baseball fans must be wondering how far this hitting streak could potentially go. He’ll very much be looking to continue this hitting streak in this series with the Yankees and beyond.
Could the Yankees’ Three-Time All-Star Pitcher Win 20 Games in 2026?
2021 World Series Champion and three-time all-star starting pitcher, Fried went 19-5 during the 2025 campaign. During the 2026 Opening Day win, he struggled in the first inning, allowing runners at the corners due to a walk and a base hit. However, after that inning, Fried looked unbelievable, striking out four batters in a six-out span, and allowing two hits in the six and two-thirds innings he pitched. It was the offense that jump-started his confidence on the mound, and after being up 5-0, it looked like no one could knock the three-time all-star’s stride. After Fried was relieved of his duties on the mound, the bullpen came in and set the tone, allowing just one hit and a walk. It’s very possible that the 2021 World Series Champion could win 20 games this season, if he looks as solid as he did in Oracle Park.
Can the Giants Compete in the NL West
Over the last few seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers have ruled over the NL West, while the Giants, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks have had to fight for a Wild Card spot. San Francisco has a bunch of deadly hitters at their disposal in Devers, Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Harrison Bader, yet the bats were silenced on Opening Day. This may be an issue as the season progresses, as the Giants will need all their guys to contribute in order to be toe to toe with Los Angeles in 2026. The Dodgers are looking to win their third World Series Championship in a row, and the rest of the NL West Division, the ones that see Los Angeles the most throughout the season, must try to put an end to the dynasty.
